The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, April 25, 19909rrr SMnrs J V J Master's streak snapped in 9-1 win By NEIL AMATO Staff Writer After a slow beginning, the North Carolina baseball team finally got over the humps of the Camels of Campbell University by way of a six-run eighth inning that keyed a 9-1 victory at Bos hamer Stadium Tuesday. Junior Rich Fernandez, pitching 2 23 innings of hitless relief, picked up his. sixth win of the season as right fielder Brad Woodall drove in three runs to raise the Tar Heels' record to 37-10. Freshman closer Paul Shuey notched his sixth save of the season in the non-conference game. Senior shortstop Ron Maurer, who recently set a school record for record ing a base hit in 3 1 consecutive games, had his streak snapped by three differ ent Campbell pitchers. Maurer, a Beachwood, N.J., resi dent, walked in his final at-bat after taking a strike with a 3-0 count. In his other plate appearances, Maurer, who entered the game batting .360, struck out; sacrifice bunted, hit into a fielder's choice and grounded out. He said it was nice to be able to forget about keeping the streak alive. "I'm just glad it's over," Maurer said. "I sacrificed early, and then in the eighth I took the 3-0 pitch. I just did that for the team." UNC head coach Mike Roberts cred ited Maurer for his attitude about the streak. "Ronnie has always been a team player," Roberts said. "He doesn't swing the bat just to swing it. He could have swung on 3-0 I gave him the green light. He is such a humble young man, and I think he really showed it today with class." North Carolina didn't appear to be very classy in the early going, waiting I T7.J jp. , lri;r,r I - i ::::::::;:::v::::::o:;:::;::::::: UNC's Steve Estroff (15) tries to nail until the fifth inning to collect its first hit off of starter Tom McGraw. In the eighth, up by a 3-1 score, the Tar Heels took advantage of some inaccurate Camel pitching that produced five bases on balls. AfterCampbell's"WildThing,"Jack Ledford, walked three batters on some crazy pitches, he was replaced by Chris Wagner with one out in the inning. Woodall, a Columbia, S.C., native, ripped a double to the wall in right that scored Steve Estroff and Darren Vil lani and sent Dave Arendas to third. Tar Heel catcher Don Leshnock then grounded to Wagner, who held Aren- DTHP.J. But no one was covering the bag, so Wagner attempted to run down Leshnock himself. Leshnock dove for first and Wagner lunged after him, creating a cloud of dust. After a period of confusion, the home plate umpire ruled Leshnock safe. Wagner, insensed by the controversial call, was ejected as head coach Mike Caldwell argued with the ump. With Wagner tossed from the con test, Caldwell called upon shortstop Randy Hood to pitch. Hood struck out Kurt Green but then walked Mark Kingston on a 3-2 pitch. That brought up Maurer with the bases loaded prime time to continue a hit parade that broke Scott Bradley's 30-game mark set in 1980. After three balls, Maurer took a pitch right down the pipe. The next delivery was low and outside, sending a run home and put ting the streak to rest at 31. Estroff, making his second plate appearance in the inning, singled in two runs as Maurer headed for third. George Karl. Phil Ford. Lawrence Taylor. Ethan Hor ton. Rob Koll. Shannon Higgins. These are the greatest names in the history of North Carolina athletics, and just a sample of winners of the Patterson Medal, the highest athletic award given at UNC. Higgins, a midfielder on the na tional champion women's soccer squad, has won the 1990 Patterson award, adding one more piece to her mantle and one more notch on her astounding career. The medal, established in 1924, is awarded at the close of each year to a senior who has most exemplified outstanding leadership, accomplish ment and sportsmanship. Last season, the two-time All American led her team to its eighth national title in nine years by tallying 18 assists and 48 total points. Both marks broke her own records, set in 1988. During the Higgins era, the Tar Heels won four consecutive titles and never lost a match, going 89-0-6 in four years. The 95-match unbeaten streak ranks at the top of the record books for collegiate soccer, both men's and women's, and approaches the all-time record for collegiate ath letics. Higgins was named the Intercolle giate Soccer AssociationAdidas Player of the Year, Soccer America's W If sfev. n- as Shannon Higgins player of the year, All-South region, the Hermann Trophy winner given to the best women's soccer player in the country each season and the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. Her career was capped by becoming the first soccer player in the history of UNC to have her uni form retired. The 5-foot-4, 120-pounder was also tabbed as the winner of the; HondaBroderick Award for women's soccer last fall, making her eligible to garner another biggie, the Honda award for the top female ath lete during the 1989-90 school year. The award will be anounced in Jan., 1991. no- "j I ' fit?
