Most major chains are not in cluded in this survey; everyone knows what Taco Bell tastes like. Instead, this list includes many restaurants unique to Chapel Hill, or at least not scattered all over the country. Needless to say, some restaurants have been missed. This is not a snub. Space and time considerations limited us to restaurants on or near Franklin mm mm Plaza Theatres Live cooperatively & economically with other graduate students. For just $275month V- For leasing information 929-3075 Street, and even then we missed a few. Don't consider a restaurant's absence in this survey to be a negative review. Baskin-Robbins Okay. It's a chain, but it's good ice cream and, more im portantly, it's cheap. Cones cost little more than $ 1 . It's also right across the street from campus. Ben and Jerry's Okay. It's a chain, but it's really good ice cream, although it's not really cheap ice cream. Ben and Jerry's hasn't been here long, but it's well on its way to becoming a Chapel Hill institution. This may be a shocker, but they have 34 flavors. Things to look out for: the Brownie Special and the Vermonster (Ten scoops. Bring your whole dorm.). Breadmen's This place is a Break fast Mecca. They offer just about every breakfast food at all times of the day (or night), and their dinners are good, too. The prices are reasonable, and the at mosphere is relaxed (polished hardwood and plants). Bruegger's Bagel Bakery The name says it all. All they serve is bagels. (Well, we lied. They also have soup.) If you like bagels, it's the place to go; lots of fresh food and toppings. If you don't Movie options for the poor and By CHIP SUDDERTH Staff Writer It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Midterms, term papers, labs, and that professor whose nasal whine makes homicidal visions dance through your head. You've got to relax. It's time to grab several hundred friends and head for.. .the movies. Chapel Hill has tons of options for the students who relieve their frustra tions best by watching Bruce Willis get blown up again in DieHardll. There are three major theaters in Chapel Hill: the Varsity, the Ram Triple, and the Plaza (the Carolina Theatre will be closing in 14K vvvv--vvvv-v IK lit., ril SEEING IS BELIEVING! Four Corners Affectionately known as "Four C's," this is a great place to meet, or dine on, the local athletic leg ends. Where else can you order a "Worthy Burger" or a "Jordan" (roast beef sandwich)? When the kitchen closes, there is still the bar, but you are going to have to stand in line. Four-Five-Six A little short on at mosphere, but there's Chinese food aplenty, and it's cheap. (Many of you will soon discover the importance of inexpensive dining.) Golden Dragon Chinese food with a touch more atmosphere than Four-Five-Six, and the prices are similar. More along the lines of fast-food than fine dining, but it does serve beer. Ham's This is a great place to eat. The sandwiches and burgers are tasty, and the homemade potato chips with ranch dressing are a religious experi ence. If you are "of age" be sure to check out the regular drink specials. The Hardback Cafe You want at mosphere? How about a restaurant and bookstore rolled into one? With live music? Even complimentary Lego September). In addition, the Carolina Union Film Committee offers free and low-priced flicks for students only. And there are more video rental shops in Chapel Hill than there are obnoxious basketball fans in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Varsity, next to the Intimate Bookshop on Franklin Street, special izes in foreign and independent films such as The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and Cinema Paradiso. It also runs an occasional mainstream re lease, an example being The Hunt for Red October. It's eccentric and artsy, but the people are interesting and the food is better (primarily upscale sandwiches like the Guac Ness Mon ster). Check out the signs on the walls. Hector's A Chapel Hill legend, Hector's has never been proven to kill anyone. Home of the infamous double-cheeseburger-on-a-pita, this is one of Chapel Hill's two best places to eat at 2:30 in the morning. Don't ignore the Athenian gyros or Greek grilled cheese, either. Linda's Actually more of a bar than a restaurant, Linda's is underground. Not the prettiest place in the world, but it's a good place to get lunch and hang out with a few friends. Cheap beer. The Ram's Head Rathskeller Rule number one: never call it the Rathskel ler; it's The Rat. Every man, woman, and small furry animal in Chapel Hill has sampled the Rat's fare. Most have ordered the Gambler (large slab o' meat) or the lasagna (a.k.a. B ucket O' Cheese). Every college town has one restaurant you must eat at. This is it. If you're not on a diet, order the cheesecake for des sert. Sadlack's Their chili resembles weekends, with a $3.00 matinee on weekdays. Just a few feet away is the Ram Triple, at the base of NCNB Plaza. Walk past the restaurant Papagayo down the outside stairs, and you'll find it next to Molly Maguire's Restaurant and Pub facing Rosemary Street. The three au ditoriums are somewhat small, but Ram Triple always has the latest major re leases. Ram Triple tickets cost $4.75, with $2.75 matinees. Can't find it at the Ram or the Var sity? Sadlack's serves mostly submarine sandwiches and has the distinction of being right on top of Linda's. Spanky's A slightly more upscale restaurant. Spanky's is a great place to con your parents into paying for dinner when they come by for a visit. Swensen's Okay. It's a chain, but it 's the only restaurant on Frankl in Street that offers a meal and a great ice cream sundae in one place. Another good restaurant for the whole dorm try the "Earthquake." Ye Olde Waffle Shop The Breakfast Mecca, Ye Olde... serves breakfast un til 3 p.m. every day. You can't get a better breakfast unless you make it yourself, and even then it's questionable. Time-Out "I was drunk, it was open, what could I dol ! " Time-Out is the only restaurant in Chapel Hill open 24 hours aday. The peak hour is sometime around 2 a.m. By 3 a.m. the question above can be heard across town. That's at the Kroger Plaza Shopping Center off E. Franklin Street. It's larger than the Ram Triple, and the releases are just as current. Matinees are $3.50, and regular features run $5.00. Survival in Chapel Hill hangs on the proper use of three plastic cards: the bank card, the credit card, and the video rental card. There's a copy of every videotape in the universe somewhere in this town. Most of the major shopping centers have rental shops. Footpower will get you to Show and Tell Video on Franklin St. next to Pizza Hut. Diehard video enthusiasts can also drive to Blockbuster Video in Durham, which has an unmatched selection. Student on a budget? Never fear. The House Undergraduate Library (The Undergrad) has videotapes and laserdiscs which can be checked out with student identification cards. Re peat: free videos at the Undergrad. And not just educational flicks either Batman, Star Wars, and many other major releases. Even a bunch of classic Warner Bros, cartoons. The Union Film Committee offers a lot of free flicks during the week. This fall, you can see The Name of the Rose, Blade Runner, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and many more, at the Union Auditorium without parting with nickel.
