Low Tide Take care of yourself,"' he said. "It's not the southern part of heaven here. There's a little hell, too." John Swofford, athletic director, said a policy approved last year from the National Collegiate Athletic Associa tion, which requires the reporting of graduation statistics, was needed. "It's information that the public generally deserves to know, and par ticularly young people and their par ents," Swofford said. "It's a plus for college athletics," he said. "It adds a degree of accountability to athletic programs that's appropriate." The graduation rate for University athletes in recent years has topped more than 70 percent, Swofford said. Nation ally, that rate is about 50 percent, he said. Tne reporting could help the University's athletic programs, he said. "Compared with some other athletic programs, our University will look good in the eyes of recruits, and that will ultimately help us." University statistics show that 76 percent of the students who entered the class of 1 988 have graduated (using the benchmark 6-year graduation rate), compared with the national average of 43 percent for public universities and colleges. Anthony Strickland, assistant direc tor of undergraduate admissions, said it is not clear how much the plan would cost the University because the exact reporting requirements have not been , spelled out. The motive of Senator Bradley is a good one, I'm sure," he said. "But when the bill passes, I'm sure he's not going to say, 'Here are the extra people and the extra postage to do this." Although the University's graduation and crime rates have been public for several years, they have never been SEAC presented together in a systematic way, Strickland said. "We have no qualms about giving this information out," he said. The University receives about 50,000 requests for information each year, Strickland said. About 20,000 people apply to enroll as freshmen, transfer or readmitted students annually. Incorporating the statistics into ad missions materials would not be too difficult, he said. from page 1 said. "It doesn't agree with the first amendment or the Constitution." All universities should encourage a free flow of ideas and this policy is preventing UNC students from being exposed to new ideas, Dunaway said. Baumann said SEAC wanted to continue canvassing on this and other issues because it is more effective than setting up tables. More than 90 percent of the students SEAC contacted through canvassing wrote letters, he said. "Canvassing is an effective grassroots tool," he said. "People don't come by the (Pit) tables as much." People are more likely to write letters if a SEAC member comes by their room with pen and paper in hand, he said. Housing has not singled out SEAC, but student groups should have a right to canvass on a political level, he said. Lisa Abbott, SEAC co-chairwoman, said Baumann and Dunaway will work with the housing department to gel permission to canvass in the future. "Canvassing is the most important avenue we have to educate people," she said. "It's the most important tool of the environmental movement." SEAC meanwhile will canvass apartments, Abbott said. Students' letters will be taken to the. Chapel Hill Town Council Oct. 29 fol : lowing an "alternative transportation' march," in which people will ride bikes and big wheels, she said. The $9.1 billion dollars in the high : way trust fund could be better spent on education and energy conservation, .' Abbott said. ; Calvin and Hobbes Shoe MERE, DAD. I MADE SOvi A.
