DDQUN$0 SPORTS ty THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 1991 QMN ft " OmnibusKevin Burgess Ttia Gsnsrcls' Larry Gallsy (62) snares a rebound over Rick Carlyle of Tift Cants Generals win all-campus basketball title, 53-42 The Generals, an entrant in the men's comp independent division of : IM-REC basketball, went into this season with one thing in mind: to win the all-campus championship. That dream was realized last Tuesday night in fabled Carmichael Auditorium as The Generals wore down The Dents to win the all- campus title, 53-42. Due to their win, The Gen erals represented UNC in the basketball competition at the Big Four Tournament at Duke yesterday. The tournament is an annual one-day intramural contest between UNC, Duke, N.C. State, and Wake Forest. -Generals captain Ronnie Stewart said the Big 4 was a big : motivational factor in his team's : success th is season. "A lot of our guys are seniors," he said. "We all wanted to play in the Big 4 badly, and we knew this would be our last chance to do it.w The Generals started the game strong against men's comp gradfaculty winner The Dents. Two straight hoops by forward Peter Henry gave The Generals a 7-2 lead in the opening min utes. But The Dents came back with an 8-0 run of their own to lead 10-7 on a hook shot by Leon Herndon. The rest of the first half was tight. A total of four ties and three lead changes produced a 20-20 tie at halftime. Stewart said the fact that the game was played in Carmichael instead of the small courts of Woollen Gym was a key. "It makes a big difference because we're not in shape. But I guess we're in better shape than they were." The tiredness of The Dents began to show early in the second half. Three straight fast-break layups put The Generals in command, 34-24. The last one came on a beautiful pass from Haywood Easter to a breaking Larry Gulley that brought oohs and aahs from the 100 or so fans in attendance. Rick Carlyle attempted to bring The Dents back. He scored seven of his club's final 12 points to cut the deficit from 16 to 11, but The Dents could get no closer than that After a timeout late in the game, Dents player Britt Visser mumbled going back onto the court, "We'll be back next year." Next year will come for The Dents, a team of dental school students, but it will be time to move on for The Generals. Besides, who needs next year when you can represent your university in the Big 4 this year? The boxscore: THE GENERALS (53) Peter Henry 15, Ronnie Stewart 12, Haywood Easter 10, Larry Gulley 8, Brad Hurdle 6, Brett Tanner 2. THE DENTS (42) Britt Visser 13, Rick Carlyle 13, Nathan Bell 10, Leon Herndon 4, Travis Paige 2. Halftime: Tied, 20-20. Upcoming Events As we enter the home stretch of this school year, there is still plenty of time to participate in an IM-REC sport. Tomorrow (Apr. 5) is the final day to turn in entries for Almost Anything Goes, and next Thursday (Apr. 11) is" the entry due date for the Open Golf Tourney. Also, softball playoff pairings will be posted Monday outside the IM REC office in 203 Woollen Gym, and there will be a Super Teams organizational meeting that night at 7 p.m. Rodney Cline There's something wrong with the mentality of these people.
