Costner promos College World Series on ESPN The Associated Press NEW YORK Kevin Costner, who starred in the baseball movies "Field of Dreams" and "Bull Durham," speaks up for the national pastime in a 60 second spot promoting ESPN's cover age of the College World Series. Costner completed the spot Tuesday, during a break in the filming of director Oliver Stone's movie about the assassi nation of President John F. Kennedy. "At some time in our life, we all wish we could return to a time when life was simpler; when all we wore was the wonderful mantle of childlike inno cence; when springtime and life itself seemed eternal," Costner says in the spot recorded in New Orleans. The promotion will first air Friday, when ESPN begins its College World Series coverage. Costner recently won the best direc tor Oscar for "Dances with Wolves," in which he also starred. Wayne Newton hospitalized LAS VEGAS Entertainer Wayne Newton has checked into a local hospi . tal with walking pneumonia, his spokes woman reported. Newton, 49, checked in Monday, a day after finishing a four-week run of nine shows a week at the Las Vegas Hilton. He had been on tour for three months before that. "He had been feeling badly for a while, but he's been working for four months straight," said spokeswoman Cheryl Kagen. He's such a professional he doesn't take time off when he is ill." She declined to say which hospital Newton is at, but said he expects to be discharged Friday. Sting stung by French town PARIS The Riviera town of Frejus has rejected Sting's request to perform at its Roman-era arena, saying a concert there by the British rock star could result in damage to the historic site. Frejus Mayor Francois Leotard said the decision, announced in Paris on Tuesday, was based on "good sense," Sting had hoped to perform at the arena during a June tour of France. He has recorded such hit songs as "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take" with the Police and "They Dance Alone" and "Bring on the Night" as a solo performer. Pianist dies of lung cancer BLUE MOUNDS, Wis. Gunnar Johansen, a prolific pianist-composer and one of the first musicians to be an artist in residence at a U.S. university, died Saturday of liver cancer at age 85. Johansen produced hundreds of solo piano pieces, sonatas, three concertos, several choral works and a symphonic work for the centennial of the Univer sity of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was artist in residence from '39 until '76. In the 1950s, Johansen made scores of records, including 50 albums of Liszt works and 43 albums of Bach, under his own Artist Direct label. In 1960, alarmed by what he consid ered an unhealthy trend toward special ization, Johansen founded the Leonardo Academy, an interdisciplinary study institute named for artist Leonardo da Vinci.
