8The Daily Tar HeelThursday, June 6, 1991 Lesbian Thespians take alternative approach to Cinderella fable . .. . ...u:.. .., r., m nr,mi.re. of Moch's "Cinderella. This goal contributes to one the goals give lesbians a chance to emerge from individuals June for this year's Lesbian and Gay ern nremiere of Moch's "Cinderella, Thic :ir' chrtwc are dediented to Py Winifred Sease Staff Writer v.; A young servant girl in distress, a royal ball and a fairy godmother who vaves her wand and wham-o, instant Hjagic. The Brothers Grimm's 'Cinderella" is a staple fairy tale for ihildren of all ages. The "Cinderella" familiar to so many ef us, however, has been revised a little. Cjheryl Moch has added a few new fyists to the old favorite. The Triangle's tjjsbian Thespians is performing her ujay, "Cinderella, The Real True Story." The Real True Story" in two acts. The play has a cast of 20 characters, which includes men, but not where you would expect them. Although the plot is familiar, the specifics differ "radically". "There is an underlying political message about tolerance, but the show is generally a campy romantic com edy," said co-producer Dori Drachman. "Lesbians and gay men face serious struggles in our daily lives, and we want to rejuvenate ourselves and our com munity with a healthy dose of humor," of Lesbian Thespians to nave tun. Their other goals include being visible in the community, celebrating their own culture and showing the general public as well as the lesbian and gay commu nity. Wolf said. Theater is a very visible art; there fore, Lesbian Thespians call the public's attention to the lesbian community and what it has to offer. Lesbian Thespians portrays lesbian and gay culture more realistically than does "straight" media, which do not deal with the issue, Wolf said. Another ambition of the group is to their own culture and to celebrate mat culture. Wolf said. "Lesbian Thespians creates a forum for lesbian actors and technicians," Wolf said. It is a space where they can safely play lesbian roles and be "out" as per formers. "Because theater is an art that thrives on visibility and personal expression, homophobia stifles an actor's primary means of communication," Wolf said. "Being closeted on stage hurts us both personalty and artistically." The Thespians are receiving support from local businesses, organizations and Pride Month, and the play is not wnat one might expect, unless, of course, one has seen the Thespians in action. The Lesbian Thespians began in Sep tember of 1989 when the idea was en tertained in a newsletter that circulates in the lesbian community. There was "an overwhelming response," said Laurie Wolf, co-producer of the group. After months of planning and pre paring, the group performed Sarah Dreher's "This Brooding Sky" to full houses in Durham and Chapel Hill. This vear the erouo decided to take Bob Sheldon, owner of Internationafist Books, who was shot to death in Febru ary. Bob was a long-time friend of the lesbian and gay community. Performances are scheduled for June 7, 8, 1 4, 1 5, 2 1 , 22 and 28 at the Durham Arts Council People's Security The ater. All shows begin at 8 p.m. The June 22 show will be interpreted for the deaf. Ticket prices are on a $7-$ 1 5 sliding scale based on oik's ability to pay. Reservations are recommended and can be made until 5 p.m. the evening before each performance by calling 929-6 1 14. on a much larger project with the South Drachman said I ne group ispenonniiigiiicMiuwn m Sty?
