The Daily Tar HeelMonday, August 19, 19919A Davis helps Staff and Wire Reports North Carolina's Hubert Davis led the U.S. World University team in scor ing with nearly 18 points per game as the Americans captured the gold medal at the World University Games in Sheffield, England in July. In a 96-56 win over Canada in the finals, Davis and Indiana's Calbert Cheaney had 14 points each to lead the Americans. Wake Forest's Rodney Rogers had 1 2 points, George Lynch of North Carolina had 1 1 and Eric Ander son of Indiana had 10. Against Israel in the semifinals, Davis scored 1 9 to lead the United States in an 89-59 victory. Davis was the tournament's top 3-point shooter, too. Rozier, Harris leave UNC Freshman Clifford Rozier and sopho more Kenny Harris announced April 26 their intentions of transferring to other schools after completing the semester at UNC. Rozier, a 6-foot-10 forward from Bradenton, Fla., chose Louisville May 1 5 after play ing in all 35 games in 1 990 91 for fourth-ranked North Carolina. He averaged 4.9 points and 3.0 rebounds. Sources around Rozier say he also considered Kentucky and Florida. Ken tucky voluntarily withdrew from con sideration after violating an NCAA regu lation about entertaining prospects within a radius of 25 miles of campus. Harris, a 6-1 guard from Petersburg, Golf from page 14A tying him for fourth place overall. Second-team All-America Pat Moore fin ished 1 4th with a 293. Burton and John Aber both finished in the top 30 with scores of 294 and 296, respectively. Scherrer, Aber and Burton earned honorable mention All-America. Fee from page 3A into alternative ways of raising revenue from students other than tuition. Tuchi linked the technology enhance ment fee to discussions of another pos sible fee, known as the "all-inclusive fee," that would be earmarked for a variety of programs. Boulton said the all-inclusive fee was totally unrelated to the technology en hancement fee. The all-inclusive fee would lump the present fees together with funds for financial aid, the aca demic libraries and computers. Provost Dennis O'Connor said he hoped the technology enhancement fee would be pursued at a future date. "We were very much in favor of these fees," he said. "I don't think (the moratorium) was necessary." 4Heyd said the moratorium would freeze student activity fee increases UNC-CH students approved in Febru ary, one to support a.p.p.I.e.s. and an other to adjust student fees for inflation. The a.p.p.I.e.s. fee would have gen erated about $30,000 for the University from a90-cent-per-student fee increase. Lorsch said administrators could have focused on problems with higher prior ity than technology enhancement. "Why they should pick this as the most pressing thing, I have no idea. There are a lot of issues that remain unaddressed (teaching assistant) sti pends, the libraries, cut class sections." Paul Bredderman and Mara Lee con tributed to this article. Aid from page 2A limited to in-state, whether it's limited to undergraduates, whether it's for this year or for next, whether it will come to us before classes begin or after. "The only thing I do know is that if we got any, we are not going to be able to consider anybody for the increase until school begins." Financial aid officials will first dis tribute available funds to students who applied for aid by March 1 , Morris said. "At this point we feel a commitment to those who applied by March 1 to be able to deliver a financial aid notifica tion to them if they're eligible, in time to get funds at the beginning of school," she said. The financial aid office has decided not to take calls from parents and stu dents between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., to process paperwork. Out-of-state students may not qualify for additional aid at all. "Usually when the state appropriates money, it 'snot for out-of-state students," Morris said. U.S. World University team win gold I , I Hubert Davis Va., remains uncommitted. He played in 27 games for the 29-6 Tar Heels, averaging 1.5 points. Harris probably would have been the team's No. 2 point guard for the 91-92 season behind rising sophomore Der rick Phelps. It is believed that Harris will return to his home state and play for either James Madison or Virginia Com monwealth. Baseball struggles to 36-23 season A disappointing 36-23 season came SOCCCf Joining Dorrance, Hamm and Lilly could be a pair of incoming Tar Heel freshman, Keri Sanchez and Tisha Venturini. Both are among the pool of national team players, though neither is expected to be includedon the 18-player travel roster to China. Sturgis to attend UNC in fall, Larry Davis to Fork Union Oscar Sturgis, an All-America at Richmond County High School in Rockingham, signed an athletic grant May 24 to play football at UNC after meeting the NCAA'sacademic require ments for incoming freshmen. Sturgis, a 6-6, 245-pound tight end, played football last fall for Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. He had committed to North Carolina after his senior season but failed to meet the NCAA Proposition 48 minimum score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Sturgis found out he met the requirements when he received his most recent SAT results in the mail. Meanwhile, Larry Davis, one of two UNC basketball recruits for 1991-92, did not meet NCAA requirements for eligibility as a freshman. He will attend Fork Union this fall. Davis, the South Carolina high school player of the year, passed up his final chance to take the SAT in June. "I feel like everything is happening With Hamm, Lilly, Sanchez and Venturini among approximately 25 players in the national team pool, the Tar Heels would be considered well represented. But the Tar Heels don't stop there. Shannon Higgins, Carla Werden, Lori more, I suspect, because of her teeth than her ability to portray a wonderful character, truly makes me fear for the future of America. Top grid prospect commits to UNC Marcus Jones, the top rising senior football prospect in North Carolina, verbally committed to enroll at UNC in the fall of 1992 in June. Jones, a 6-6 12, 246-pound defen sive lineman from Southwest Onslow High School near Jacksonville, informed the Tar Heel staff of his decision June 20 while attending the CarolinaMack Brown football camp. He cannot sign a binding letter of intent until February. Jones is one of only two major pros pects from the state in the last eight years to announce his intentions before his senior season.
