The Daily Tar HeelThursday, August 22, 1 99 13 B Orioles' Davis returns from disabled list swinging big bat The Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas Glenn Davis' long-awaited return to the Balti more Orioles' lineup is quickly paying dividends. His three-run homer off Oil Can Boyd in the fifth inning Tuesday night helped the Orioles from a 6-3 deficit to an 8-6 victory over the Texas Rangers. The Baltimore first baseman, traded from Houston before the season and signed to a $3,275,000 contract, re turned to the Orioles lineup on Monday after missing 106 games while on the disabled list with a neck injury to his spinal accessory nerve. Davis averaged nearly 27 home runs per season in his five seasons in Hous ton. Tuesday's homer was his fifth in the American League. In his first two games off the DL, Davis was 3-for-7 with five RBIs. The 30-year-old Davis matched a career-best Tuesday night by driving in five runs. Still, he wore a pair of mas sive ice packs on his shoulder and lower back after the game. "I didn't expect to have that kind of a night," Davis said. "I was more con cerned at the time with doing the little things that win ball games. I'm still rehabing, still trying to get my strength back." Orioles manager Johnny Oates said, "I didn't have a problem putting him into the lineup his first day back. Even putting him in the fourth spot didn't bother me." Dav is was swinging the bat well even before he went on the disabled list, Oates said. "When he came back, it was all a timing thing he had to work on before he was ready. He's very aggressive at the plate, but he's always had a real short swing. That shortens the time he needs to get his timing down. He has that stroke and still hits for power," Oates said. Big things were presumed when Bal timore signed Davis signed prior to an arbitration hearing. But the two-time NL All-Star's injury put those plans on hold, at least until Monday's move. Davis suffered his injury in drills just before Baltimore's first game of spring training. It soon caused weakness in the trapezius muscle of his right shoulder. That led to his being placed on the DL on April 25 after homering the night before. Many thought Davis' season was over at that point. When he went out, it was a challenge, for him just to toss the ball back to the; pitcher. -. "I took every step along the way as a test, and I had to pass each test before I; could go on to the next," Davis said. .3 r" Contemporary European Clothing Italian Footwear for Men and Women Dr. Martin ShoesBoots Hew Shipment has arrived! 1lerChot University Mali Chapel Hill, NC 919929-9629 FOXCROFT JL.A PARTMENT SX STUDENT SPECIAL This coupon Is good for one HUGE tastefully furnished 2 bedroom apartment plus FREE bus passes for the 1991-1992 school yearl $650mo.
