Charles Morrow III current periodicals and read ing room in Davis Library to the memory of the former UNC provost Friday. More than 100 of Morrow's friends, family and co-workers filled the room and all available seats, as several speak ers reminisced and told stories about Morrow. James Govan, University librarian, spoke about Morrow's hard work and dedication to the University. "It will be a happy reminder of how much Charlie meant to the University," Govan said. "There was a consensus that this would be the appropriate thing to do." Morrow and his wife Mary were re sponsible for the establishment of the University library endowment. Chancellor Paul Hardin talked about the time during which he and Morrow worked together in the University. "He was indeed one of the finest citizens and leaders of the University in recent decades," Hardin said. Edward Bernstein, an economic re searcher at the Brookings Institute, spoke about his friendship with Mor row and Morrow's dedication to the library and to the University. During the ceremony, Govan and Mary Morrow unveiled raised letters spelling out Morrow's name on one of the room's walls. A plaque listing Morrow's accomplishments also was placed in the reading room. Mary Morrow thanked the audience for attending the dedication and for their appreciation of her husband's work. "I want to thank you for this marvelous expression of regard for Charlie," she said. Morrow, who died in 1989, gradu ated from UNC and worked as a profes sor, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and provost during his career at the University. He is best known for his work in the library improving the collections. A portrait, showing Morrow with scenes of UNC in the background, was presented to the University by Lia Nickson, one of his personal friends. After the ceremony.
