His campaign focused on recycling and environmental issues, increased efficiency of public transportation, traf fic and student-community participa tion. Chilton is an active member of the Student Environment Action Coalition's Tar Heel Recycling Program, and he helped initiatecampuswide mobile-drop recycling sites. Herzenberg expressed surprise at the strong support he received frnm nil wr. tions of the community. "I thought that some of my stands were controversial and would hurt me, but apparently this is not the case," he said. "We did work very hard to win this election." Herzenberg said he thought his votes spoke for the wide range of residents his campaign represented. "It is amazing to me the support that I get from people who don't agree with me, whether it is garbage collection or whatever," he said. "I think I have broad Calvin and Hobbes support from conservatives to social ists." Herzenberg said he is concerned pri marily with improving the service he can provide to town residents during his second term. "I just want to do a better job for the citizens of this town," he said. As chairman of the noise ordinance committee, he encouraged student in put. He said University and town rela tions weren't bad, but communication lines should be open. Herzenberg added that alternative solutions to the property tax should be found. First-time council member Capowski, a 25-year resident of Chapel Hill and a faculty member of the UNC physiology department, founded and still is active in the Chapel Hill Alliance of Neighborhoods. "I thought I would be in the top three," Capowski said. "We will be working hard on town-University rela tions. ... I'm delighted to see that the students turned out in such great num bers." Capowski 's campaign platform em phasized town-gown relations and called for decreasing crime by increasing po lice protection. He also said tax in creases should be "modest to zero." Wilkerson, re-elected for his second term, said he kept the community as a whole in mind. He said he was not surprised that he was re-elected. "As long as I came in between first and fourth, that would be fine with me," from page 1 he said. "The idea was to becnm- re elected." In his campaign, he said town-gown relations, taxes, crime prevention and the division of the public safety system were important. Wilkerson, a local min ister, said the University and town should discuss issues openly. ChrisGoodson.JaikieHershkowitz, Dana Pope, Emily Russ, Kelly Ryan and Chris Trahan contributed to this report.
