Brown Stiff Writer As usual, defense was the order of the day Saturday in UNC's 21-17 win over South Carolina. Linebackers Dwight Hollier, Tommy Thigpen, Jonathan Perry and Eric Gash set the table for the Tar Heel feast and tackle Troy Barnett served the dessert. By meal's end, the dominating unit had tallied IS tackles for no gain or minus yardage, including seven quarterback sacks for a Gamecock loss of 45 yards. But . . . that was part of UNC's game plan. "The biggest thing (defensively) was that we got a lot more pressure on them and we were able to get it early," said UNC head coach Mack Brown. "And the thing that they can do that makes it very tough and people do not talk about their two backs but (Rob) DeBoer an (Brandon) Bennett can run the football very well." Before running into the Tar Heel defense, DeBoer and Bennett hadacom bined average of 106 yards per game. Saturday, DeBoer rushed for S3 yards on 12 carries, an improvement on his game average of 32.7 yards. But Bennett fell nearly 40 yards below his season average, gaining 34 yards on nine tries. Freshman Terry Wilburn, USC's fourth-leading rusher, stepped up his game and carried the ball six times for 44 yards. Still, the Gamecocks man aged only 89 total yards on the ground: Quarterback Bobby Fuller ran the ball nine times for minus-42 yards. "They've got so much speed, they spread you out," Brown said. "So the thing that we felt like is we've got to defend the pass better, force them to run the football and then go make the play. The good thing today: We kept them from getting the big ball on us." Hollier made a key play in the second quarter that kept the Gamecocks out of the end zone. With the score tied at seven and USC looking at fourth down and one at the UNC 25, the AU-ACC linebacker stuffed DeBoer for a 1 -yard loss. UNC promptly marched 73 yards in 12 plays to go ahead 14-7. On the day, Hollier chewed up the chickens for 12 tackles, nine of them unassisted. Thigpen served up a healthy platter of chicken a la Fuller as he harassed the USC quarterback all afternoon. He re corded five hits, upping his season total to 96 tackles, second in the ACC. Still, his five tackles did not indicate the amount of time he spent behind the line of scrimmage. "He's (Fuller) real strong," Thigpen said. "I took him a little lightly, and he flipped me over one time and I missed him twice. He's a great quarterback." Fuller's strength and elusi veness were most evident on the last play of the first half. With the game tied at 14 and USC facing a first and 10 from its own 46 with seven seconds on the clock. Fuller dropped back to pass. Thigpen bolted Calvin and Hobbes J m FOCTU C BrKXDFORW . NH T lU1'"-& s( BEMS ME, MOM. Zl J K "I! M TPAlfr4 il&i mmbetcsem. "" - "- through the middle of the line and dove for an apparent sack. Instead he found himself lying face down on the field. "I thought I broke my back on that play," he said. "He's a strong, strong quarterback and I didn't know that at all. In films, I've seen him go down and knew a few guys had tackled him around his knees, and I didn't know why. I think I should have gone for the legs." Despite Thigpen's reservations, Brown said he was glad to have him and Hollier healthy and back in the lineup. "The reason we didn't get much pres sure (on the quarterback) early in the year was that Dwight Hollier was watch ing (from the sidelines) and Tommy was hurt," Brown said. "And We have the ability to bring those people. Even if they scheme-wise have people to block them, they can jump overjump around and make plays." Of Thigpen's play. Brown said: "He closes on the quarterback so quickly, and even when he doesn't get there, I think people are aware that he's around. And that's really important when you 're rushing a passer. He's really good at that and has exceptional acceleration," Perry and Gash were really good Saturday as well. The duo combined for 1 1 tackles, giving the Gamecocks a heaping helping of chicken pot Perry V mmsM wxiimfi Troy Barnett and Gashed potatoes. Early in the fourth quarter, with UNC leading 21 -1 4, Perry sacked Fuller on third and 10 at the UNC 1 1 for an 1 1 -yard loss. The Game cocks had to settle for a 39-yard field goal off the foot of Marty Simpson. Gash's big play came early in the third quarter. USC had the ball at the UNC 47 on first and 10. Fuller rolled left and found Gash lurching in the flats. Gash's third interception of the year promptly ended the Gamecock drive. Still, it was Bamett who saved the -game for the Tar Heels. With 28 sec onds left in the game and USC driving on second and six from the UNC 4 1 , the 251 -pound junior walk-on dropped Fuller for a 9-yard loss. The Game cocks failed to advance the ball on third and 15, and Fuller's last-ditch Hail Mary with seven seconds remaining was bat ted away near the end zone. "Basically, that's what we needed," said defensive tackle Roy Barker of Bamett's sack. "We were just hanging our hopes on the defensive efforts in the latter part of the game, and that just was a big sack. Perry did a good job of slamming his man and collapsing that side of the line and Troy was able to just go right around and make the sack." The play of the defense definitely took the cake Saturday, and Bamett's sack provided the icing. traipit m w4 Hi VMP auras 3W9B11 AMAZING... INCREDIBLE...
