THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1992 OMNIBUS SPORTS Y Women win Schick 3-on-3; THE DAILY TAR HEEL WEEKEND MAGAZINE men lose UNC sent two teams to Charlotte last Friday night to play in the championship round of the Schick Super Hoops 3-on-3 Bas ketball Tournament. Unfortunately, only one came home with a win. The UNC women defeated Furman Uni versity 27-19 to win the women's champion ship, but the men weren't so lucky they lost to East Carolina 46-45 in overtime. Both games were played before the Hornets took on the Seattle Supersonics. All four teams making the final round were recognized in a presentation of plaques at halftime before a sellout crowd. The women, made up of Amy Ward, Beth Ward, and Laurie Ply, earned a spot in the championship game by doing well in the regional tournament at Furman on Jan. 25. UNC and Furman both went 5-0. "We played well all of the games (at Furman)," Ply said. "We didn't come close to losing." UNC continued its fine play in the Charlotte Coliseum. "We didn't have a hard time winning once we got started," Beth Ward said. Ward said she and her teammates enjoyed the experience of playing in an NBA arena. "It was a lot of fun," she said. "It was neat to shoot 3 pointers on an NBA line." The UNC men, made up of Ronnie Stewart, Chris Brogden, and Haywood Easter, went 5-1 in the 32-team men's tournament, also held at Furman on Jan. 25. That was good enough for them to reach the final game. . "Our only loss was to Appalachian State," Stewart said. "We beat the defending champions, South Carolina State, 41-36." Stewart liked his team's chances before the game in Charlotte. "Our point guard, Haywood, is real quick, and he can drive," Stewart said. "Chris is a good shooter, and my range is the 3-pointer. We work well together." But the shots just didn't fall against ECU. "We trailed the whole game, and we just didn't shoot well," Stewart said. "I don't think playing on that big court was a factor. We started well, then we got slack." Stewart added that the experience of playing on an NBA court did not make up for the loss. "It was exciting," he said. "You don't get many opportunities to do something like that. "But it wasdisappointing. We didn't come just to play. We came to win it. It wasn't a very happy ride home." 1-on-l basketball winners IM-REC Sports sponsored the annual one-on-one basketball tourna ment Jan. 24-25 at Woollen Gym, and there were winners in four divisions. Shandra Sullivan won the women's division, and Jason Bates captured the men's championship. Jay Murray won in men's under 6'0" competi tion, and Scott Stevens won in the men's over 6'0" division. Men's volleyball tips off The UNC Men's Volley ball Club stood 2-1 after the first two weekends of play. The club beat American University in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18. They came home on Jan. 24 and lost to Kentucky in three close games. The next day produced a win, though. UNC knocked off Appalachian State three games to one. The club then traveled to Lynchburg, Va., last weekend for three more matches. "After the match with American, we changed our offense a little bit," said club president Jamie Grimstead. "We're testing out a new offense." The change may have had something to do with the loss to Kentucky, Grimstead said, but the offense was definitely clicking against ASU. After losing the first game to the Mountaineers 15-13, UNC bounced back to win three games in a row, holding Appalachian under eight points each time. UNC has seven players returning from last season's 12-10 team. That club had a 4-2 record in ACC play and was undefeated in the E1VA (Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) until the conference tournament. The team's head coach is Mary Jones, an assistant with the UNC varsity women's team. Mark Bergner, a professional beach volleyball player, is the club's assistant coach. We re really optimistic about this year, Grimstead said.
