Saturday's Wake Forest team had no player or coach who had ever beaten UNC, and old habits die hard. In the final 6: 1 6 Saturday, Wake Forest made one shot and one free throw, while miss ing the front end of two one-and-ones, missing six shots, turning the ball over four times and earning a technical for hanging on the rim. The final Wake mistake King's fumble with 16 seconds left was the most costly. Odom defended his substi tution of the 6-foot-8 Owens for the disqualified McQueen, but did admit it limited his options on the final posses sion. "I thought we had enough ballhandling in the game for a short period of time to overcome anything that might happen," Odom said. "There was not a play because at that point we had no true point guard, and there was no way we could run a set play." Rogers said he thought the lineup would work to the Deacons' advantage, but they failed to execute. "We knew some where we had a m is match; somebody on UNC couldn't guard one of our big guys," he said. "We really didn't want to shoot that early, though."
