That one player that can carry a team on his shoulders through the rough times. North Carolina's baseball team has found its man junior catcherpitcher Donnie Leshnock. UNC had dropped five of its last six games and returned to Boshamer Sta dium Monday needing a win. "Right now Donnie is the one who is picking up the whole team," said UNC head coach Mike Roberts. "He's really aggressive behind the plate. He's really aggressive hitting. He's aggressive on the mound. "I really honestly say that I think he is the best defensive catcher in the coun try." Leshnock played behind the plate for five innings in Monday's matchup with Appalachian State. He then took the mound in the top of the sixth and led UNC to a 5-3 win, improving the Tar Heels' season record to 8-7. Appalachian starter Jim Epler held UNC in check through the first five innings, retiring 14 of the 18 batters he faced. The Tar Heels found themselves trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Manny DaSilva received a walk to open the inning. Chad Holbrook fol lowed with a single, putting men on first and second. The runners advanced on a wild pitch. Leshnock then reached first on an error. DaSilva scored on the play, and Holbrook moved to third. After Chris Cox struck out, Mark Kingston reached on an error, scoring Holbrook. With men on first and third and one out, Bo Durkac laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Leshnock, and UNC had knotted the score at 3-3. The Tar Heels won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Hughes started off the inning with a walk and scored on Keith Grunewald's double. Crunewald moved to third on the throw to the plate, and scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by DaSilva. UNC starting pitcher Jay MacMillan pitched five solid innings. He recorded seven strikeouts, including the first three batters he faced, but left the game trail ing 3-0. MacMillan received little help from his defense. Two Tar Heel errors led to two of the Mountaineer runs. Of the 1 1 runs MacMillan has given up this season, seven have been unearned. "This is a non-conference game against ASU, but mentally, this is a huge win," Leshnock said. "It may end up being one of the biggest wins of the season. This might pick us up."
