THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 1992 SPORTS Water Ski Club wins at Angier They practice from sunrise to sunset at Jordan Lake. Recently, all that hard work paid off for the UNC Water Ski Club as they won a 12-team tournament in Angier. "It was very cold and rainy," said club co-president Georgiana Bowman about the April 4-5 tournament. "Some of us even had to ski in sleet, but our club fared much better than the others did in the cold." Carolina was led by freshman April Coble, the current world junior water ski champion. "April is currently the leading female skier in the South Atlantic Conference," Bowman said. In fact, Coble became the first ever UNC woman to place first in a water ski tournament by winning the women's division at Angier. "Over all, she is the second person to finish first," Bowman said. "We had a male to win several years ago." The tournament was just the second that the UNC club had ever hosted. "We generated a lot of profit (at Angier) through entry fees and concession sales," Bowman said. "All the club members had a great time." The club has 35 members. Bowman said. Ten members, along with two alternates, constitute a team for meets. "The UNC Water Ski Club is open to all undergrads who have not used up six years of el igibility ," Bowman said. "It's pretty rare for someone to use up six years." Bowman said the club's skiers were competing on an individual level during the spring semester to gain enough points to attend all-star competition the second week of May. ' "Then, in d ie fall, the club will be able to compete in regionals ," she said. "If we place first or second at regionals, we will be invited to nationals," Bowman said. Carolina currently skis against teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee. "Any under graduate university can participate," Bowman said. "North Carolina is the state with the most teams right now." Anyone interested in joining the club can call Bowman at 929-9903 or the club's other co-president, Alex Jarvis, at 933-33 1 2. UNC Women place first The streak is over. For nine consecutive years, N.C. State women had won the women's division of the Big 4 Intramural Tournament. Not this year, though. Carolina women outscored State 40-39 to capture the team champion ship in the 46th Annual Big 4, held April 8 at UNC. Duke finished with seven points, and Wake Forest did not send a women's team. The State men won that division by defeating Carolina, 43-35. Wake had 13 points, and Duke scored 12. "State had won the women's division every year since 1982," said IM REC assistant director Betty Davis. "The last time Carolina won it was in 1976. "Our men did very well, too. State has won the men'schampionship for eight years running. Our men last won in 1980." Competition was held in the following events: badminton, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, racquetball, Softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Five points were awarded to the school finishing first, and three, two, and one points were given to the second through fourth place teams, respectively. "The day went very smoothly," Davis said. "The people who worked did an excellent job, from the timers up to Marty (Pomerantz, IM-REC director). It was a major activity, but we formed a six-person committee so no one was realty overwhelmed." Davis said turn-out for Big 4 day was very good, with 320 athletes participating from the four schools. "We want to send out a special thanks to Ann Marie Brown," Davis said. "At the women's cross country event, we were short one person. Marty saw her playing golf near the starting line at Finley Golf Course and asked her if she would run. "She sacrificed her time for a 3.3 mile run, and she ended up placing fourth out of seven runners. The women wouldn't have won without her." The weather was perfect for Big 4, Davis said, with sunshine and 75 degree temperatures. "At our organization meeting, we were wondering what we would do in case of inclement weather," she said. "Well, the Duke intramural director said, 'It never rains at Blue Heaven on Big 4 day.'" "We were happy to prove him right."
