All Easy History Lesson By Bmtty Joknoon, Grad* i Mrs. Simmons’ and Mrs. Griffin’s fifth grades dramatiafe scenes from the history of the United States one afternoon last week. Our grade, was invited to attend because Mrs. Mc- Leod helped with tbe songs and musk. That is about the best way to learn history I know. Tbe actors did not say any lines. But a girl in costume stood on a box at one corner of tbe stage and ex plained the scenes. The play opened with Columbus seated at a desk read ing a book. He decided to sail west to find India, and tbe next scene show ed him planting a flag on American soil. He really just stood a flag up on the desk. Then came the early ex plorers and discoverers, and next the settlers. They traded bracelets to the Indians for Corn, and an Indian girl, Poeahontus, saved Captain John Smith from hiring killed. The Puritans were shown at school. A toy came in cov ered with furs like Daniel Boone. The colonists did not want to pay heavy taxes on the things they need ed to buy from England. One scene "V ' / PLEASURE cigarette CnrifHIN,IMRi«MnHIMMnCt, showed the people tearing up boxes of tea and throwing them away. That was tbe Boston tea party, but there was also a tea party in North Caro lina at Edenton. Another scene show ed the inauguration of George Wash ington. Then there was a Southern scene with boys and girls dancing the minuet. They also showed the Forty Niners going to California in 1849. the secession of the Southern states, and Lee’s surrender. The part I liked tost was the schoolroom scene. The teacher went about tapping the children on the head. Another scene I liked was the negro scene. The negroes were sing ing “Little ’Liza Jane.” The play was forty-five minutes long. At the close everybody sang “America.” The children in the fifth grade wrote the text for these scenes them selves. They did it instead of taking an examination in history. They also had the name of each scene printed on a large piece of cardboard, and some of the children drew some very nice pictures for some of the scenes. One was a picture of Fulton’s steam boat and another was a picture of the spinning jinney. The children’s moth ers made the costumes. They were very pretty. Hoase to Speak at Wilson R. B.
