Barbara , Bounds is east as Aunt Jane, and her two children, Bobbie and Michael Bounds, are helping in .the technical department, which plays an extremely important pan in the smooth running of the show Shane Liston is another Penny packer child, and his mother, Mrs. Patricia Liston, has volun teered to assist the stage man ager in directing back-stage traffic. This u not tbe first time the Caseys have appeared together on tbe stage. Mrs. Casey and Mike are remembered for their sparkling performances ir. the Plsymakers' “On Borrowed Time.” a production in which Dee was a stand-ir. for another child actor. *• The Pennypacker play, direct ed by John W. Parker, will be giver, at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 7 and 8, in the Play makers theatre. Caldwell (above), will join the staff of the Uni versity School of Journalism as an assistant professor in Septem ber. Chancellor Robert B. House and Dean Norval Neil Luxon an nounced this week. A native of Alexandria. S. D., Mr. Caldwell holds two degrees from the Uni-j versity of Minnesota and has all work on his Ph.D. completed i there except for final approval of his dissertation. His B.A. and M.A are in journalism. His Ph.D. will be in political science. Editor of the Minnesota Daily, campus newspaper, as a student, Mr. Caldwell was graduated mag na cum laude in 1943. After serv ing in the Army he was a foreign service office with the State De partment from 1946 through 1949. Most of hia service was in Rome and Palermo, Italy, as press attache and public affairs officer. In 1949-1950 Mr. Caldwell wasj public relations director and journalism instructor at the Du luth branch of the University of Minnesota and since 1960 he has taught journalism part-time while doing graduate work on the Minneapolis campus of the Uni-; versity of Minnesota. This last semester he also taught journal ism at Macalester College in St. Paul. - During Hie summers of 1962, THE CHAPEL HILL WEEKLY Chancellor Describes Nature of Freedom Chancellor Robert B. House of the University told junior col lege officials assembled here l*ut week that freedom, which has an unbreakable tie with discipline in education, is more an achieve ment that a natural right. ‘“The freest man on earth is the one whose desires and actions coincide with what the law allows,” he said, explaining that this man has developed his gelf discipline to such a degree that his reaction* to situations are automatically lawful. The Chancellor spoke at the opening session of the seventh annual Junior College Work- Conference. W. Orson Beecher of Armstrong College, Savannah, Ga., who is conference chairman, presided. A second speaker that day was Philip Weltner, Oglethrope Uni versity, conference consultant, who discussed “Freedom and Dis cipline in College Instruction.” He was followed by Miss Ida Fitzgerald, assistant dean at Stratford College in Virginia, 1 j who talked on contributions of the humanities to freedom and 'discipline. Chancellor House presided at the annual sonferenee banquet • Monday night, at which H. Arn old Perry, dean of the UNC ; School of Education, spoke briefly. Other authorities who spoke. at the conference were Miss , 1953 and 1954 Mr. Caldwell wrote foreign affairs editorials for the Minneapolis Tribune. Since 1950 he has also served as assistant editor of the World Affairs Pro- 1 gram carried in North Carolina 1 .by the Winston-Salem Journal. 1 Mr. Caldwell is married and the father of three daughters and one son. His wife, also a grad uate of the School of Journalism at the University of Minnesota, worked briefly in the Duke Uni versity News Bureau during World War II when her husband was stationed at Camp Butner. The Caldwells will make their home in Chapel Hill at 505 Pitta -1 boro street iKatherine Taylor, dean of the Woman's College in Greensboro; ~C’arence H. Schletter of Duke ‘University, Dean R. M. Lee of Mars Hill College, and Louis 0. Kattsolf of the University here.
