Dr. Guy Phillips
Addresses Teachers
“In the midst of a world of
many ideas, gadgets and mater
ial servants, there is danger of
getting lost,” Guy B. Phillips,
professor emeritus in the Uni
versity School of Education, stat
ed Monday night to 700 teachers
of home economics, meeting in
Greensboro.
“The emerging calls to meet
the demands of the space age,
the changing industrial patterns,
and the threats of social revolu
tion offer the teacher a real op
portunity to lead,” he said.
“Team teaching, teaching ma
chines, television, audio-visual
aids, and new teaching tech
niques tend to confuse the person
without a good sense of direc
tion.”
According to Dr. Phillips, there
are five criteria for the good
teaching that we need so much
today. Besides having a keen
sense of direction, teachers must
have a sense of perspective, "a
broad overview of society and
its needs rather than a narrow
textbook concept.” The third es
sential is a sense of responsibil
ity. “The true teacher must be
a defender of children against
shortsighted economic policy, po
litical expediency and limited
professional outlook.”
Dr. Phillips said the teacher
must enjoy a sense of confidence
and security. “The salesman
sells when he believes he can sell
and fails when he is frightened
by his task.”
“In the last place,” Dr. Phil
lips concluded, “there must be
a sense of humility which makes
teaching a servant of the learn
er. There is no place for sar
casm and dictatorship . . , Great
teachers are humble in the face
of their pupils and of their task.”
