Increased demends on our Police Department have made us aware of the importance of a well-trained, efficient right arm of the law. “Irf an effort to give credit to this service, to boost the morale of the Deportment, and to give a lasting impression of this com munity’s appreciation, the Chap el Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce has established a ‘po —Racial Meet— (Continued from Page 1) past two weeks met with no suc cess. However, this in no way alters the fact that the entire community has a stake in settling this problem. These community leaders have been most respon sive in developing new approach es to desegregating our town. The Police Department bought tiie land, about 28 acres, for $3,000 three years ago, and has paid for it by deducting $3 from each man's pay every month. Members of the Police Depart ment have cleared some of the land, removed rocks, improved the entrance road, built barbecue pits, cleared right-of-way for a power line, and have had power installed and a well dug. The Department has nearly $4,000 in vested in the land so far. The Chamber of Commerce's fund drive is aimed at collecting between $1,500 and $2,000 in con tributions so that the Police force can borrow the remaining necessary funds for a SIO,OOO building. A small shelter has been built on the land. The land has been used by Boy Scouts as a camp-site. The Chamber of Commerce, Mer chants Assoc ation executive di rector Joe Augustine said, “hopes to raise enough so the police can have a place to recreate. Their cases are expected to be called in Recorder's Court on Tuesday. The new sidewalk marches will be conducted on weekdays on a spot basis without any advance public notice other than a two hour warning to police. The recommendation to resume demonstrations received over whelming approval. Only three negative votes were counted. The COB split practically down the middle, however, on the exe cutive committee’s recommenda tion to march right out of Thurs day night’s meeting and down Franklin Street in a spontaneous demonstration. Several argued that it would violate an agree ment with the police for advance notice. During the debate no tice was sent to the Police De partment. A COB member sug gested, however, that five min utes hardly constituted advance notice. The spontaneous demon stration proposal was defeated, 78 to 61. Read the Weekly classified ads.
