Police Fund Drive Ends With $1,750 The Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce Policemen’s Fund drive ended yesterday with total contributions of about $1,750. The Chamber’s executive direc tor, Joe Augustine, said contri butions would still be accepted, but that a formal appeal for fur ther contributions would no long er be made. The drive was started in early August, aimed at between $1,500 and $2,000, to enable Chapel Hill's police force to make a down pay ment on a SIO,OOO building on their recreation land. The police force bought about 26 acres off NC 86 three years ago as a recreation area. The tract has since been used by policemen and their families and Boy Scouts. The policemen have cleared part of the land, improv ed the access road, and install ed electricity and well water. Mr. Augustine said that within a week or so he would present Police Chief W. D. Blake with a check for the contributions col lected in the drive. Checks may be made out to Policemen’s Fund, Chamber of Comerce, and sent to the Cham ber of Commerce, Box 127, Chap el HilL All contributions are tax deductible. THE CHAPEL HILL WEEKLY BILLY ARTHUR Pete Ivey’s recollection of Rub inoff, the renowned shaggy dog of the Thirties, brought back a lot of memories. (Rip Slusser and Herbert Led better gave him the name, be cause the dog frequented Alfred Williams Co., which then was where Bob Varley now holds forth. Buck (that was Herbert’s nickname) managed the store and Slusser worked there when he wasn’t practicing and playing football. Rip being my room mate at Old East, I frequented the place. And Rubinoff, just be ing himself, did likewise. I guess he got the name be cause there were few Chapel Hill lights on on Sunday nights and qually few people on the streets. But Buck, Rip end I always went to the store to listen to the Ed die Cantor radio program. The band was directed by Dave Rubinoff, an excellent vio linist, who always had a solo part. And when the program was over, Rubinoff would follow me and Rip to Old East. There were few radios back then. I remember Gooch’s res taurant had one with a speaker outside the Franklin Street door. And every night about 6:45 the students me among ’em blocked the sidewalk to listen to Amos and Andy. I think the Dekes, the Betas and the rest of the houses on Columbia Street frat court had radios, but a lot of others did not. There were few, if any, in the dorms. Back then people listened to record players, ex cept late nights when they’d search out a “wireless” to hear Kay Kyser, Coon-Senders, Jim my Green, Ben Bernie, Herbie Kay, and Guy Lombardo. Friday Nljbt TU » Weekday, until 9.-39 And on fall Saturday afternoons when the Tar Heels were play ing away from home, we went to Memorial Hall to listen to and watch the game not on radio or television. It came in by Morse code and Western union. A Morse operator sat in one of the rooms or wings and tran scribed the report of the game. On the stage we had set up a panto-something or other. I forget the name of the thing. But it was a big green board with lines representing the ten yard stripes and goals. One of my assistant cheer leaders would move the little white football up and down the board as the game progressed and we got the report from the telegraph operator. It was always bedlam when Johnny Branch or Rip would break loose. We’d dramatize it a bit by moving the white ball tantlizingly backward as if they were being thrown for a loss, moving it forward a bit, then backward and across the board like a broken field runner.
