These matters were batted around, anti the suggestion natur ally presented itself; Why should n’t eagh persqn have one num ber few every purpose? One’s Social Security number would be the same as his telephone num ber and his automobile tag and his house number, the number on his insurance premiums. Now, it’s admitted the num bering might be too long for re membering. But it seems the Univac could _be_helpful in quick tracking of numbers. For example, feed a man’s name into the input mech anism and push a button and alt his numbers would be listed. Then the numbers could be cross indexed. so that if you knew a man’s laundry number, or num ber for his Q.I. life insurance policy, you would automatically be able to trace readily his name, and all kinds of numbers —or an all-purpose number—that fits him and no one else. Admittedly there are flaws in this proposal. But these might .-hfi-ivorked out by computer mathematicians, if they wanted to tackle it. At least it’s a step in the right direction, as Presi dent Kennedy said as he quoted an old Chinese maxim that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step.’’ Richard Dodson has taken that first step. A newspaper in Macon, Ga„ in commenting on numbers, has proposed that everyone be given a number at birth, and after that build oh that number as a com mon denominator for each per son. Then one night, on a popular TV show, the master of cere monies will finally say, “Will the real GZK 276-48-4803-B-64 please stand up?’’ LEGION DANCE American Legion Post 6 will hold its regular monthly dance Saturday, beginning at 9 p.m., at the legion home here. THE CHAPEL HILL WEEKLY' —Pleasant Drive^- (Continued from Page 1) any specific alternative routes for the roqd suggested by any body else, and said he had no particular ideas hitnself. "We just want to see what the high wav peqple come up with," he said. But he added, "We’re afraid they’ll use the money on some other project. It’s hard to get money appropriated again if it’s used for something else.” The Highway Department has budgeted $52,000 for the road, which would extend, as present ly proposed, 2,492 feet from the present end of Pieaspnt Drive in Carrboro to an as yet undeter mined point on Umstead Drive. It would be 60 feet wide. Mayor Sandy McClamroch said last week he would meet with Town Manager Robert Peck and a Highway Department right-of way acquisitions officer Friday concerning the Tewn’s granting the State the necessary right-of way across a corner of the Chap el Hill Cemetery, which lies in the proposed path of the road. The road was originally pro posed in the summer of 1960. At that time its feasibility was more or less demonstrated by a publicity stunt in the form of a race between men on foot fol lowing the probable route of the road, and men in a ear driving from the end of Pleasant Drive all the way through Carrboro, Chapel Hill, down the Airport Road, and along Umstead Drive to where the road would probably emerge. The men in the car won, but by a scant margin. Last year a more serious ef fort to have the road built was launched by the Chapel Hill School Board, which was con cerned with the problem of school buses in heavy traffic. The School Board's request for the road was emphatically sup ported by the Carrboro Com missioners. The Commissioners ore concerned with the steadily increasing traffic load on Carr boro's Main Street, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. The Pleasant Drive ex tension would relieve this traffic pressure. I I Q'i And humil STRAY OR LOST DOG, COLLIE shepherd mixed. Brown with white and black markings. Weight about 50 K>s. The reason for the income drop is the severe drought which hit parts of the County, par ticularly in the north end, this summer. Mr. Barnes said a poll of to bacco farmers indicated an an ticipated tobacco income two thirds to three-fourths the size of last year’s. The County has been designat ed an agricultural disaster area. Mr. Barnes said 54 farmers had applied for relief. He estimated that 30.000 to 40,000 bushels of grain will be shipped into the County under the relief. The Commissioners declined to decide where to iiang a portrait of the Earl of Hillsborough, for whom the County seat was nam ed. The portrait, to be painted by a New York artist and financed by George Watts Hill, was sug gested by Mrs. Robert Lester of Chapel Hill. •Mrs. Lester wants the picture hung behind the judge’s bench in the Courthouse in Hillsboro. Mrs. Lester explained that the portrait will be Orange County's observation of the North Carolina Tercentenary. As for hanging it behind the judge's bench in the courthouse, Mrs. Lester said that there was considerable precedent in many counties in the State for hanging a namesake portrait in that spot. Chatham County is an example, she said. But some members of the Hillsborough Historical Society want the portrait hung in the Orange County Historical Museum in the old courthouse. The Commissioners hesitated to make a decision. They agreed to accept the painting, hut they turned the matter of where to hang it over to the Historical So Work W .till* i!
