Scholarship Goes To Cuban Refugee CUban refugee Jose Idalberto Ferreiro, who now lives in Greensboro,’ has received- the Chemstrand Corporation’s SSOO scholarship for the present school year, Director of Student Aid at UNC Julian iMason announced today. Mr. Ferreiro’s parents are being detained in Cuba by the Castro government. The scholarship is given an nually to a chemistry major who plans to go into industry and who needs financial aid. “Ferreiro’s grades are excel lent,” commented Dr. Mason. He played on one of UNC’s inter collegiate baseball teams last year. Now a junior, Mr. Ferreiro spent his first year of college at the Greensboro division of Guil ford College and came to Caro lina for his second. He worked at P. The Castro government in Cuba jailed Mr. Ferreiro’s fath er for almost a year and then offered to release him to come to the United States during the summer. When Mr. Ferreiro went to Miami to meet his par •ents, however, he was informed that they would be “detained” in Cuba indefinitely. He originally went to Greens boro to be near his sister.
