Wednesday, October 9, 1963 Planetarium Opens Show The emphasis on North Caro lina history in the Morehead Planetarium’s next regular pro gram, "Tin Charter and the Sev en Stars,” is of particular interest to school children “The Charter and the Seven Stars,” commemorating the Caro lin Charter Tercentenary, opened yesterday at 8:10. Performances, including special advance reser vation children's performances, wiU be given through October 38. History and social studies teach ers of grades 5,7, and 8 will find the historical content of ‘‘The Charter” program valuable for their classes. The program is concerned with the relationship of astronomy to the time and place of the granting of the Carolina Charter. The Charter was granted in London in 1663 by King Charles 11 of England. Described in the program are, for example, the geographical boundaries of the territory granted to the Lords proprietors, including the mystery of “Luck Island”; the events leading up to the granting of the Charter: and sailing and naviga tion techniques of the 1600’s, all explained and illustrated, with their relationships to astronomy, in narration and animated color reproductions of maps and pic tures. Special performances for school groups are given Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. by advance reservations only. Regular public performances are given daily at 8:30 p.m., with extra performances at 11 a.m., 3 and 4.m. Saturdays (11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on UNC home football Saturdays), and at 2,3, and 4 p m. Sundays. Admission is 35 cents for chil dren through age 11 or grade six; 50 cents for children age 12 or grade 7 through college; and 75 cents for adults. One adult chaperone is admit ted free with each ten members of any group. Funeral Yesterday For James L. Hay Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church for James L. Hay, who died early Monday morning at Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hay was 73. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Vance Barron. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Hay was the father of Mrs. Robert C. Culton of Chapel Hill. He had lived in Chapel Hill since his retirement in 1958 after 21 years as executive secretary of the Railroad YMCA in Spencer. Mr. Hay was a native of Glas gow, Scotland, and entered the service of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Canada in 1914. In 1937 he came to Spen cer as executive secretary of the Southern Railroad YMCA and supervised a social service and welfare program for young railroad men. He is survived by his wife, the former Viola Crowe of Revel stoke, British Columbia, Canada; five daughters, Mrs. Culton, Mrs. B. W. McKenzie, Jr., of Bristol, Tenn., Mrs. Exra H. Williams and Mrs. Harold F. McNabb of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mrs. Wil fred H. Vance oif New Orleans; one son, James H. Hay of Win ston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Al fred Young of Vancouver, Cana da; and thirteen grandchildren. Pallbearers were Dr. J. Kemp ton Jones, Charles S. Sullivan, Joel Carter, Dr. James N. Row land, Morty Bergen, and George L. Coxhead. Music Teachers To Convene Here The North Carolina Music Teachers Association will hold its fifth annual convention in the annex of Hill Music Hall at the University Friday and Satur day, October 25 and 26. A public concert will be given October 25 at 8:30 p.m. in the Hill Hall auditorium in conjunc tion with the convention. Per formers will include Eugene Mauney, organist at St. Stephens Church in Goldsboro; and two Chapel Hill groups, the North Carolina String Quartet and the Carolina Opera Workshop. The convention will feature sessions on piano teaching, strings, voeal music, and theory and musicology. “Music in tlie Romantic Era” is the theme of the convention. Lecturers and performers will include many of North Caro lina's best known names in mus ic and will represent well known departments and schools of mus ic Ibrougheut the state.
