From left: Miss Edinger; Estes Hills School prin cipal Miss Mildred Mooneyhan, Mrs. Rec Program Funds Are Appropriated The Executive Committee of the Chapel Hill Community Coun cil voted unanimously Thursday night to appropriate between $2941 and $3420 to the Recreation Commission. The Committee recently hesi tated to give the Recreation Com mission this formerly promised final payment from its 1963 Chest collections. The recent success of the Rec reation tax referendum had led the Executive Committee to be lieve the Recreation Commission would no longer need its final Chest payment. Robert Midgette, Community Chest Council chair man, said the committee had planned to distribute the promis ed donation among other agen cies instead of giving it to the Commission. Bu t Town Manager Robert Peck, speaking for the Recreation Commission, said the Commission had included the promised al location in its 1963-64 budget. “If the money is not appropri ated to the Recreation Commis sion it will mean cutting into the budget,” said Mr. Peck, “and we University Baptist’s Activities Today “To hear or Not to Hear” is tile sermon to be preached today lat the 11 a.m. Worship Service of University Baptist Church. Continu ing their series on “Studies in * the Nature of Religious Truth,” Dr. White will speak on “Re igious Literature.” The Adult Discussion Group has chosen as its topic, “The Rise of Baptists in England.” The evening worship service will begin at 7:45 p.m. Rose Society Meets Tuesday Mrs. H. R. Totten, program chair man, announces that the Chapel Hill Rose Society will meet Tues day at 8 p.m. in the lounge of Home Savings and Loan Associa tion. Dr. Gertrude Willis, president, will report on “Proof of the Pud din” as compiled by members of the society regarding the best rose varieties to grow in Chapel Hill. Visitors are welcome. They and members are invited to bring a specimen rose. The rose should be brought in a Coca-Cola bottle and labeled with name of its varsity and its owner. Mrs. Totten has invited Joseph Richert of Raleigh to be the pro giam speaker. Mr. Richert is the Carolinas representative on the board of Directors of the Ameri can Rose Society. He will bring an interesting report of the re cent annual convention of the American Rose Society. Refreshments and social hour will end the meeting. How ever, last year's Chest drive hav ing fallen short of its goal, ap proximately $3,000 will be the actual sum given to the Commis sion. The 1963-64 Recreation Depart ment budget is based on revenue of $30,386. Approximately $5420 of this amount will come from the Community Chest allotments. Women are welcome to come to the chapter of their choice. Meetings are as fol lows: St. Agnes Chapter, 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the home of Mrs. George Penick, Coker Drive. Use the Classified Ad Section for excellent results. THE CHAPEL HILL WEEKLY Sermon Announced For United Church The Rev. DeWHt Myers, Jr., will deliver a sermon on “What’s Four Thousand Italians More or Less?" at the 11 a.m. service at United Church, 211 W. Cameron Ave. The choir, under , the direction of Lynn Ikenberry, new direc tor of music, will sing “Go Not Far From Me, O God!” by Ziflfgarjtlli. They will be ac companied by Mrs. Warren Morris at the organ. The children of the first four grades will withdraw to Fel lowship Hall after the Children's Sermon which precedes the reg ular service. Through the medi um of films, games, end handi craft, they will “visit” Japan each Sunday during October. The program is directed by Mr. and Mrs. Hansel Hollingsworth. Sunday School classes for all ages are held at 10 a.m. in Fel lowship Hail. The Young Adult Class, under the leadership of Dr. C. David Jenkins, will dis cuss the sermon of the previous Sunday as presented in outline form by the minister at the class meeting each week. Visitors are welcome at all services of the church. Nursery and kindergarten facilities are available during the church hour. At 5 p.m. every Sunday the Junior High Fellowship meets for recreation, supper and wor ship. The program this evening will be the first in a series pre senting the different worship ser vices of the Judeo-Christian tra dition. It will be a study of the Seder Passover celebration, the family service held in Orthodox Jewish homes on the first night of the Jewish Passover. Estes Hills PTA Meets Thursday Estes Hills School PTA will hold its first meeting of the year at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the multi-purpose room of the school. All parents of children enrolled at Estes Hills are urg ed to attend. Dr. Ira Fowler, PTA presi dent, will outline plans for the year, present the $2,207.78 bud get, and introduce members of the PTA executive committee. Miss Mildred Mooneyhan, school principal, will introduce the faculty of 25 teachers. At an open house after the business meeting, parents will •have an opportunity to meet their children's teachers, visit the schoolrooms, and chat with other parents.
