Voters will Bold a community
service program on Wednesday
evening, October 30, at 8 in the
Institute of Pharmacy on Church
Street, to inform interested citi
zens, both new and old, on vari
ous aspects of the local govern
ment and services.
Howard Thompson, Superinten
dent of Schools, will speak on
school administration and fin
ancing. Joe Augustine of the
Chapel Hill Merchants Associa
tion will discuss services avail
able in the town. Gordon Cleve
land. County Commissioner, will
explain the local tax structure.
In addition, a number of local
officials will be present to be
introduced.
This meeting is open to all.
Older residents are urged to at
tend also, not only to bring them
selves up to date on the local
stene, but to meet newcomers
in town.

class to solo under the Flight
Instructor Program (FIP) at the
University here.
The FIP allows qualified senior
cadets of the Air Force Reserve
Officers' Training Corps to be
[! given pilot training leading to
j a private pilot’s license. The
■ instructing is done by Air Force
! officers and local civilian con
! tractors, and is supported by the
1 U. S. Air Force.

to Maj. William H. Klinker Jr.,

Jim Beatty Moves To Durham
Jimmy Beatty, one of the
world's greatest distance runners,
is returning to North Carolina
irom California, where he has
been living since 1959.
Mr. Beatty will live in Durham.
He has not disclosed his plans
yet, but it is reported that he will
be associated with the State. Gov
ernor Terry Sanford is expect
ed to announce his position with
in a day or so.
He and Mrs. Beatty are at pres
ent looking for a home to rent
in Durham. Their furniture, he
said, is en route to Durham from
I .os Angeles. They will settle down
when furniture arrives and a
home is found. He has resigned
his position with Allstate Insur
ance in Pasadena, California.
Mr. Beatty was here yesterday
to attend the funeral of the late
Coach Dale Ranson, from whose
hands Beatty moved to Hungar
ian track coach Mihaly Igloi at
the Santa Clara Youth Village
near San Francisco. In 1961
Mr. Igloi established the Los
Angeles Track Club. Mr. Beatty
will represent the United States
