Lessen The Danger | 01 Christmas Fires j To lessen the danger of a dis astrous Christmas tree fire, the National Arborist Association of fers the following suggestions: 1. Choose a tree with pliant and lustrously green needles. Such needles are filled with moisture and are more fire-resistant than those that are dried, brittle and yellowish in color. 2. Keep the tree standing in a pail of water outdoors in a spot protected from the sun and wind until you are ready to set it op in the house. 3. Saw several inches off the base of the trunk before bring ing the tree indoors. Place the tree in the coolest spot in the room, well away from a radiator or warm air vent. 4. Keep the container in the tree-stand filled with water dur ing the entire time the tree is in the house. A surprising amount lof water will be absorbed and retained in the needles. 5. Arrange the light bulbs on the tree so that none will be in direct contact with the needles. If the needles near a bulb start turning brown, change the loca tion of the bulb. 6. Ts Christmas gifts are un wrapped near the tree, don't let the wrappings accumulate under the branches where a dropped match or a misplaced cigarette could start a serious fire. 7. Observe such precautions as using an electric outlet well away from the tree, inspecting the light cords for frayed or worn spots in the insulation, turning off the tree lights when you leave the house, and keeping a fire ex tinguisher where It can be reach ed easily and quickly in case it is needed. dean retires Dr. Alan K.
