A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grievous words
stir up anger. * * * * The tongue of the wise useth knowledge
aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. * * * *
The eyes of the Lord are in every place beholding the evil and
the good.—Proverbs 15:1*3.
Americanism is an unfailing love of country, loyalty to
its institutions and ideals, eagerness to defend it against all

CENSUS OF AGED FOR PENSIONS
The announcement that the Federal Government will employ
three thousand white collar jobless to compile a national census of
persons eligible for pensions under the old-age pension section of
the Social Security Act brings to light certain aspects of the enor
mous amount of new work which the pension system imposes on
the Federal Government. 9
The Social Security Law stipulates that the Government shall
assist the States in providing pensions for persons sixty-five years
of age or older. The courts accept Census Bureau records as
proof of age. The Federal Government has therefore decided to
use the census records in determining the age of persons who claim
pensions.
Although the Federal census is taken every ten years, it is
now revealed that the 1900 census is the only one which carried
both the year and the month of birth of all persons. It consequent
ly includes a large percentage of those approaching the sixty-five
year age limit upon which payments will be determined and will
be used as the basis for a national age file which the Social Se
curity Board will require) in its check list.
Going through the census records and making the age file ne
cessitates the names of all persons in alphabetical order on cards
with the age stated. When this is done it will require but a mo
ment’s time to ascertain the age of any person in the United States
The age record file will be prepared in St. Louis and will re
quire a year to complete. The wages of the three thousand white
collar workers who will thumb over the records and write the cards
will be paid from the $4,800,000,000 Work Relief Appropriation
Law.
THE EDITOR IS AWAY!
Hid away back up in Avery County, about 10 miles off the
railroad, and miles from a concrete strip, where peace and content
ment prevails, ye editor is this week taking his first vacation in
five years. What work could be done before leaving was handled;
but we are leaving it in competent hands, Brother Harry Boate
pinch-hitting for “us,” and he is some pinch-hitter. The editorial
matter he is not to be held responsible for, neither for any mis
takes that may be found, as “we” made them all before we left, so
as to make our “batting average” for blunders stay at 100 per
cent! And while in the wilds the editor is going to forget The
Journal, his debts and his enemies, but never his friends, as we
treasure them for the faith they have had in us, and their faith
fulness to us. A fish story may be brought back, as the water
flows where we are going; who knows, probably a bear story—
but, nobody would believe it, for still in the mountains they are
bottling “dew,” which makes poor men rich and rich men poor;
makes old age see power and wealth—all being a chimera or a
will o’ the wisp’ so to speak. At any rate the writer of this is
hoping for peace of mind, a relaxation of body, and a rest that
will fit him for the battles to come.

Senator Long’s
Death Mourned
By Green
• Washington, D. C.—Wililam Green,
president of the American Federation
of Labor, issued the following state
ment regarding the death of Senator
Huey P. Long, who was assassinated
in the State Capitol at Baton Rouge,
La., on Sunday night, September 8.
“The assasination of Senator Huey
P. Long was a dastardly act which
calls for the severe condemnation of
all classes of people.
“Labor shares with all classes of
people the common sorrow which they
experience over his tragic death. He
was regarded as a champion of the
rights of the common people and us
a fearless advocate of economic and
social measures which he believed
would promote social justice.
“He occupied a very lartfe place in
the hearts and minds of millions of
working men and women.
“Labor extends to the family of
Senator Long its most sincere sympa
thy in their sad bereavement”
