C„ THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1936 OVER FOR WHOM? ■ujmII Ki,y^iJr^ie"l^ Company. i. “,h'r ^ SWiSSSfiS TOSSS Evidently Mr. Liggett excludes a very large number of work ing men and women from his survey. numDer or work According to the reliable estimates of th» a [ion of Labor there are twelve million six humtod thouMndlbE t°d,JfdJ?,Itmpk>yed aduHs in the United SUtS^hiS JlimSn undred thousand of whom would be on relief rolls if they did not Imve temporary subsistence wage” Jobs under the Works Proir mnfirWK1^ f!na#n?fd by the $4’ °00,000,000 work relief JS5 gram enacted by the last Congress. In addition to the twelve mil lion six hundred thousand unemployed adults there must be taken m£jrn!erat,on their deP*n<ients, millions of whom are com pelled to eke out a precarious existence on relief doles. So far as the employed workers are concerned, industrial em reduced wage rates one cent per hour during the last half of 1935 and increased the length of the average work week three hours, which made it possible to throw an additional million work ers into the unemployed army. \ It is plain that Mr. Liggett limited his the-depression-is-over statement to people who do not earn their living by the sweat of their brow. Undisputed figures reveal that in the last half of 1935 the profits of one hundred and twenty large corporations increased 141 per cent. A recent analysis shows that stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange have increased in value thirty-one billion dollars during the last three years. Unadulterated and wholesale prosperity has thus hit stockholders who own the na tion’s industrial and commercial life. But to declare “the depres sion is over” in the United States when’ we have an army of over twelve million six hundred thousand jobless workers and their dependents suffering for the comforts of life is an exaggeration not based on the actual condition of the people generally. Such a statement would be received with applause at a con vention of stockholders, bondholders and business sien, but if made before an audience composed of the masses of the American people, including low-paid wage earners and the unemployed army the enthusiasm would in all likelihood not raise the roof. The annual report of the head of the Indiana State Police De partment for 1935 lists the arrest of 132 alleged violators of some of the laws of the state. Listed are 77 students, 13 teachers, 1 professor, 39 housewives, 1 cowboy, 1 detective and 9 ministers. The absence of printers from the list is noticeable but not astonish ing.—Typographical Journal. And we still contend that it is better to be born lucky than rich. 1 Organizer J. Dooley, of the Hosiery Workers, who is also membership director in this territory for the Loyal Order of Moose, had a busy day Saturday. He made meetings of Textile Workers at Concord, Paw Creek and North Belmont. But these “old” men can stand it and take the gaff. Brother Dooley is doing somfle good work in this territory.
