BOND-OWNED TAX DODGERS CURBED
(Editor’s Note.—On April 19. 1938, William Green, president of the
American Federation of Labor, delivered a radio address to Great Britain
under the auspices of the British Broadcasting Association. Mr. Green spoke
from the studios of the Columbia Broadcasting System, in Washington,
D. C. The A. F. of L .executive gave the British radio public a urvey of the
present economic status of working men and women in the United States,
explained the origin and sinister development of the attempt of John L.
Lewis and his Committee for Industrial Organisation to over throw democ
racy in the American Federation of Labor and establish a labor dictatorship
under his personal control, stressed the cause and remedy for the tragedy
of unemployment afflicting millions of workers, and urged the necessity of
definite action by democracies to preserve popular governments throughout
the world.) .
The action of the Senate in stripping future issues of United
States bonds of their exemption from Federal taxes by a provision
in the five-billion dollar 1928 revenue bill is regarded as a step
in the right direction by those who believe there should be no tax
dodgers haven sanctioned by the Government itself. The bond
tax amendment, submitted by Senator Borah, was adopted by the
close vote of 34 to 33. The proposal is also favored by President
Roosevelt.
It is frequently charged that those who talk the loudest in
proclaiming the desirability of amending our Federal tax laws
so as to to levy more taxes on the lower income groups in order
to make them “tax conscious” are the very people whose safe
deposit boxes are loaded with bonds exempt from Federal
taxation.
PORTLAND DOCK WORKERS
FAVOR A. F. OF L. UNION
PORTLAND, Ore.—The most spec
tacular of the C. I. 0. attempts to
raid the A. F. of L. International
Longshoremen’s Union here has been
decisively beaten by the men them
selves, who voted five to one in fa
vor of remaining in I. L. A. super
cargoes and checkers’ locals. Of their
balolts in the recent 60-day open ref
erendum on the question of affiliat
ing with the C. I. 0. or remaining with
the A. F. of L. Of the total votes
cast, three were blank, 116 were for
the A. F. of L. and only 24 for C. I.
0. affiliation. Following this decisive
victory, the union unanimously pass*
ed a motion precluding any further
C. I. O. discussion, thus completely
rebuffing the few individuals who
had attempted the “raid’ ’on the I. L.
A. local.
