Council Teamsters-Chauffeurs Discuss Brewery Workers Dispute; Which Is One Of Long Standing Editor Labor Journal: ' In a meeting of the general execu tive board of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Chauf feurs, held in * Miami, Fla., Ever glades Hotel, beginning Thursday, Jan. 19. President Daniel J. Tobin, called the meeting to order at 10 A. M. General Secretary-Treasurer, / Thomas L. Hughes, called the roll of members and all were present with the exception of Vice-President Gou die, of' Chicago, who was unable to be present due to the disturbed con ditions there and to court proceed ings in which he has been named in an alleged conspiracy in the milk industry. The general president proceeded to transact the regular business of the organization. One of the most important matters to come before the board was the question of the Brewr ery Workers. President Tobin asked for the opin ion of the board as to whether or not he should ask the executive coun cil of the American Federation of Labor to unseat the Brewery Work ers’ local unions in Central Bodies until such time as they complied with th ■ decision of the*federation regard ing the jurisdiction over brewery drivers. North Carolina chartered, into court; and in view of the fact that the statements made by our people in central bodies, have been used in the courts against us, we feel we are not free to express ourselves in central bodies where the Brewery Workers are also seated; and because of the foregoing the ex ecutive council be requested to issue an order instructing all central Bodies to unseat the delegates from Brewery Workers’ local unions in any district in which the laws and decisions of the Federation regarding the jurisdiction of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters are dis regarded, and that said local unions shall remain unseated until the de cisions have been put into effect. The general president then asked the general executive board their opinion as to what should be done in the next convention of the American Federation of Labor in regard to seek ing the suspension of the charter of the Brewery Workers’ International Union. After a thorough discus sion of the matter it was suggested by Vice President McLaughlin that the general officers use their own dis cretion as to how to proceed, depend ing largely upon developments be tween now and the time of the con vention. RALEIGH, March 15.—The Labor department reported yesterday that 510 North Carolina manufacturing in dusties employed one per cent more people in February than in January and that weekly payrolls increased by 1.8 per cent. Fifty non-manufacturing industries had employment increases averaging | 2.5 per cent, and 1‘89 retail businesses | had a 1-8 per cent employment rise with a six-tenths of one per cent pay roll boost. In the wholesale field, however, 116 establishments listed a drop of 14.5 per cent in employes and 4.3 per cent in weekly pay rolls, but a gain of 11.9 per cent in average weekly earnings. The manufacturing industries em ployed 121,536 persons last month, and the average weekly earnings of $14.98 for an average 36.6 hours week were eight-tenths of one per cent above the average in January. Most expansion was shown in fur niture plants, with an employment gain of 3.3 per Cent for February over January and a boost of 13.2 per cent in the amount of weekly pay rolls. Average, weekly earnings rose 9.5 per cent\o $15.18.
