I QUESTION BY WM. S. GREENE EMPLOYMENT? Senator Borah 1 has always been noted for his states- i manship. He is outspoken as an i ISOLATIONIST. He has been one of those things (and so have f) for many years. My humble opinion is that the LT. S. coulq be made entirely independent of all dther nations, com mercially. But, sometimes things change. And the older, we get, the less able to adapt ourselves to changes we become. Times have changed since Statesman Senator Borah first stated his ISOLATIONIST ciews. Transportation and |communication improvements have made terrible in roads on my Isolationist viewpoint, particularly the Aeroplane, Subma rine, and Radio. Radio comes to us from every point in the world right into our own homes. How can we call ourselves Isolationists any more? J recognize that neutrality of thought is impossible outside of trying to keep an open mind as long as possible. Neutrality of acts by our Govern ment is entirely necessary to kei>p us out of war. Mr. Borah told us1 that, his sources of information told him j that a crisis was not due in Europe j about the time of adjournment ojf the last Congress, aud that his sources j were better than those of the Govern- j ment. This turned out to be a dud. ' The fact that war has been declared j in the interim between the last jCon- j gress and the special session also has | nothing to do with the consideration of neuatrality that was proposed un der the Blum bill in the last session. Cash and Carry provisions, with va rious safeguards to American Ship ping and citizens planned to keep us from getting involved, also mean good business in certain lines, mean ing more employment to U. S. labor. And the neutrality revision request ed by President Roosevelt in my opinion makes us more neutral in act. And Senator Reynolds is an ither citizen who stated there would no war. Evidently his sources vere also not as good as those of our Government. PLAUDITS? We are told that self araise has a bad odor. But the Char otte Central Labor Union has the -ight to feel proud of their meeting, ieid on September 20. with many of ficials visiting, even though I happen, in passing, to be Secretary of that body. It is the efforts of the dele gates that are wholly responsible for the spirit that prevails in Charlotte, ft is an education in labor problems to listen to the various and widespread activities covered in these meetings. Tlie writer is proud to belong to this nuly American organization, and in his little way, help as much as pos sible. CONGRATULATIONS? Two new locals affiliated with the Central Body in flieir Sept. 20th meeting, wth others falling in line. The meet ing was tlie best attended in many months. What a difference a few years of hard effort makes in an or ganization. Let everyone keep up the spirit of the Central Body as it is being displayed at present, and no one knows to. what size we may grow. This column takes this opportunity to congratulate the Teamsters and Chaef/eurs local and their striking members in the excellent way they are conducting their strike against the Great Southern Trucking Com pany. PERSONAL? Constitutions of International Labor Organizations are about the most important part of their makeup. We, in the A. F. of L , claim that our organizations aer truly Democratic in character.
