$500,000 Venture
SPOKANE, Wash., Feb. 12.—The
American Federation of Labor is
teady to go into the laundry business
on a permanent basis in an effort to
settle Spokane’s two-and-a-half-year
laundry workers' strike.
Meyer L. Lewis, A. F. L. western
director, said the organization had
half a million dollars to invest in the
venture, begun in 1937 by the Laun
dry Workers’ International union.
His accountants, he explained, had
found the laundry “had been effi
ciently operated and has made money.”
The laundry opened while brick
bats were flying in the then-young
strike.
Violence soon died out. Several
months later picketing ended when a
court order forced pickets to stay 100
feet from the entrance of one estab
lishment, but the owner-union dead
locked over closed shop, and increased
wage demands still remained.
“We have watched the Spokane
Laundry Workers’ strike for a long
time and did what we could to help,
said Lewis. “Now we mean to go
into the laundry business in a big way
and build and operate the largest
laundry plant this city has ever
seen.
