ing membership of American Federa
tion of Labor anions in New York

160,000 during 1889, according to sta
tistics made public by Thomas J. Ly
ons, president of the State Federation
of Labor.
Mr. Lyons declared that the A. F.
of L. membership in New York State
alone was greater than the paid-up
membership of the CIO in the entire
nation. The State Federation head
said his statement was intended “to
enable the public trf realize that the
CIO is not nearly so potent as it pre
tends to be and mat actually the CIO,
compared with the A. F. of L., is like
a little Chihuahua compared with the
great big St. Bernard.”

In Past 26 Months
Some 70,428 checks for SMI,680
has been delivered by the Charlotte
Employment service to unemployed or
partly employed workers in Mecklen
burg and Union counties the last 26
months, according to figures compiled
in the central office of the North Car
olina Unemployment Compunction
commission.
In January, the Charlotte office de
livered 610,888.70, included in 1,518
checks, and in February, 1,623
for $10,878.81 were distributed.
The white offices served the terri
tory outside the immediate area of
ne^ro offices in 10 centers by means
of itinerant services to outlying points,
the representatives on these weekly
trips handling business for both white
and negro residents.
Charlotte negro office handled
|23,926 checks for 8141,817.57 for die
26 months of distribution through
