Assist Gov. Hoey
In ‘Red” Hunt
RALEIGH, June 2.—The North
Carolina American Legion, through
State Commander Junius H. Rose, of
Greenville, accepted last night enlist
ment by Governor Hoey in a cam
paign to unearth possible fifth column
activities in the State.
A few hours after Governor Hoey
called on the commander to co-oper
ate in a probe of un-Americanism,
Rose replied that “We offer our serv
ices fearlessly and grimly in all mat
ten relating to the defense of our
shores and the preservation of the
ideal of our democracy.”
The move against possible fifth col
umnists was the second which the Gov
ernor has made in the last two weeks.
Recently, he ordered the State Bureau
of Investigation to ‘‘keep an eye out”
for un-American activities.
Hoey also disclosed that he had re
ceived a number of letters from North
Carolinians warning of fifth column
ists. None of the letten contained
specific charges against individuals
or organizations, he added.

LONDON.—At • wedding in Sun
derland, the gowns of the bride and
her three bridesmaids and the morn
ing suit of the groom were made
by the father of the bride. He is
John B. Elrick, who spent every
night for three months to complete
the task. His daughter, Gladys, was
a striking figure in her gown of ring
velvet with 15-foot veil embroidered
with white hearts. The bridesmaids
wore dresses of the same material
and Carried mulls decorated with
white heather and gas mask cases to
match.

OGDEN, UTAH.— Women often
are the unsung heroines of forest fire
fighting and go entirely without rec
ognition except among the men they
may temporarily direct, it was dis
closed at a western regional con
ference of national forest officials.
Wives of forest service dispatchers
and lookouts frequently take over
when their husbands are called to
the fire lines. The women are left
to direct the activities of all fire
fighters concerned until their hus
bands return to their posts.
When a government contracts more

bonds than it can redeem, piles up a
heavier tax burden than the people
can carry, then it must go bankrupt—
