UNITS SHAPING
DEFENSE URGED
WASHINGTON, D. C.—Organized
labor should have adequate represen
tation on all groups dealing with the
national defense program and on all
boards for training skilled workers,1
the current issue of the American
Federation of Labor’s Monthly Sur
vey of Business declared. Emphasiz
ing the necessity of protecting demo
cratic procedures and the representa
tion principle in developing the de
fense program, the Survey said:
“We need to safeguard our repre
sentative organizations and keep them
functioning throughout industrial and
political life. ..Results should be ac
complished by cooperation between
government and groups representing
business, labor, consumers and others
concerned in production and distribu
tion. Organized labor should be rep
resented on all policy-making groups
as citizens of a democracy with a
contribution to make. It is plainly
obvious that labor should be repre
sented on. local boards for training
skilled workers. Wages and work
conditions above legal minimum*
should continue to be fixed by col
lective bargaining.”
