BAKER DENIES AIDING WILLKIE; SAYS HE GAVE NO ADVICE TO THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 24.—President Claude M. Baker of the International Typographical union in an ad dress to that body in convention here yesterday denied he had advised Wendell L. Willkie on labor matters in the preparation at Colorado Springs of Willkie’s acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination. Willkie on August 14 listed Baker as one of his “par ticular advisers” and said he had advised him on labor problems. “As a matter of fact,” Baker told the 1. T. U., “I met Mr. Willkie, along with other members of the board of trustees (of the 1. T. U. home) and we entertained him and found him to be a very fine gentleman, spending an hour or an hour and a half in our dining room in Colo rado Springs. The balance of his stay at the home, he spent admiring the dairy herd. “There was no discussion of politics ...” The convention, which ended tonight, approved the national emergency defense measures now before Con gress and promised the union’s “fullest co-operation.” It also voted to instruct its executive council to meet with officers of the American Federation of Labor and “im press” upon them that certain sections of the L T. U.’s constitution be respected and that the union “shall exer cise complete and unrestricted authority to define its jurisdiction.” COMPLIMENTS TO LABOR BECKER ROOFING CO. ROSEMUND President, International Federation of Technical Engineers, Architects and Draftsmen’s Unions, A.F.L. In this country today there are those who advocate the method of pressure groups to secure legislative re dress of all social evils. Some of the proposed cures are so impractical is to virtually in the face of Providence. When this procedure is carried beyond a certain point the inevitable “crack up” is bound to follow and then de mocracy dies and then—enter the totalitarian state with its blood purges and other terrors. So when the troubles multiply for 1940 and when strife and turmoil beset Labor and Industry, let the work ers keep their eyes on these new messiahs, note if they are genuinely American in the policies which they advo cate or if they are just dishing up some of the discredited policies imported from some uniortunate country of the Old World. See if there is not something in the policies which they advocate which will provide the necessary springboard tor personal political preferment. Then be on guard and stand by those policies and traditions that have made these United States the envy of the rest of the world.
