MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING CHARLOTTE CENTRAL LABOR UNION ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH The meeting was called to order by President Scoggins and the invoca tion was given by visiting State Or ganizer Brown. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and ap proved. Credentials were received from the Bakery Workers for Broth ers J. W. Butler, T. J. Davis and A. T. Patterson, and from the Musicians for Brother Sam Citron. Various committees reported as us ual, the main point for a Westerntao ual, the main point of interest being the reporting of a charter being air mailed for a Western Union employes’ 'local. After getting the firemen into 1 the A. F. of L. unanimously, this lo cal should be a fitting follow-up to prove the conservatism of the A. F. of L., especially after such a short time has elapsed. Roll call of dele gates was dispensed on motion duly passed because of the expressed desire of many of the attending delegates to listen to President Roosevelt’s address to the Teamsters Convention in Wash ington at 9:30. A letter was read from President Green of the A. An editorial about the Mu sicians Union in the News of this day was read, and among other misrepre sentations, it was brought out that one of the articles mentioned in such terms as having no need for a card, was the president of an A. 7. of L. unoin, the AGMA. He evidently saw more need for a union card than the News editorial writer. ORGANIZER A. E. BROWN OF THE STATE FEDERATION PAYS JOURNAL A VISIT Labor in Charlotte was glad this week to have Representative A. E. Brown, of the State Federation, in its midst. Brother Brown has done a great work throughout the state, and is always a welcome visitor here. He has been engaged in organization work in this vicinity, and in building up some of the locals already existing. The Journal was pleased to have him make a call. He always leaves one a better frame * of mind, and with greater aspirations. His Wallet Lost in Kma, Owner Risks Life in Vain NEW ORLEANS.—John Nedwick took a double risk when he jumped into the Mississippi river after his wallet. First, he took the risk of drown ing, but he didn’t consider that im portant when he jumped in. Sec ond, he took the risk of being an unidentified body if he didn’t save those papers. Nedwick had accumulated the pa pers in his wallet for 22 years, and he wasn’t going to let them get away without a try for .them. He wasn’t a good swimmer, but he bucked the strong current and the undertow, anyway. Three hours later a fishwife heard Nedwick’s feeble calls. A sheriff’s boat pushed out into the stream and gathered him in as he clung leech like to the post. He still didn’t have the papers. President Talks For Roosevelt At Rogersville ROGERSVILLE, Tenn., Sept 10.— President William Green, of the Amer ican Federation of Labor, urged la bor unions to “help return President Roosevelt to the White House” in an address last night before the conven tion of the International Printing Pressmen’s A Assistants’ Union of North America. Green declared he favored Mr. Roosevelt because of his “humani tarian measures, such as the Social | Security Act and the Civilian Conser I vation Corps." He also said labor should “support” the President be cause of his “beneficial labor policies.” The labor leader urged the dele gates to stand back of the AFL in ad vocating good labor standards in the defense program. Major George L. Berry was installed for his 34th year as head of the union. Seizes Gold Coins; Victim Can't Squawk PHILADELPHIA. — Raymond Pandze was robbed of two watches and $795 in gold pieces, but he isn’t certain he wants the thief apprehended.
