27.—The Aluminum company of
America last night flatly rejected de
mands of its striking C. I. O. work
ers to discharge or transfer a $27,
a-week sheet mill helper the union
charges threatened one of its officers
and caused their walkout last Friday.
Superintendent R. M. Ferry of the
big works here which was busy on
more than $1,000,000 in national de
fense orders, asserted the issue in
volving the worker was an “after
thought which the union has brought
forth” and that it waa “the collection
of union dues which caused the men
to quit work.”

EVASIVE AS TO HER INTENTION
OF RESIGNING CABINET POST
Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins did not postthrely
deny reports that she had tendered her resignation, when
questioned in her Palwan compartment on a Southern train
Monday as she rode toward Now Orleans, where she in to ad*
dress the American Federation of Labor convention tonight.
“If, and when, I do resign,” she said, holding a telegram
just delivered from her secretary in Washington, “the an*
nouncement will certainly come either from me or the White
House. I see by this telegram that the White House has
issued a denial of the New York Times’ so-called Authori
tative’ report that I had tendered by resignation.” Miss Perk
ms was obviously nettled.
After inviting reporters, who had boarded the train in
Charottte, to sit beside her in her compartments, she went
on with a sniff that was not all due to the bad cold from
which she has been suffering for two days, “Authoritative!
— who in a case like this can be authoritative, except me or
the President?”
Miss Perkins folded the telegram with an air of finality

DETROIT.—Mr. and Mrs. John
Schuman hava discovered that they
have nibbed elbows three years be
fore they met and fell in love.
With the opening of the 1M0 base
ball season, a local newspaper pub
lished a picture taken at the first
game SI years ago.
Schurman, who recalled the photo
graph and had vainly looked for it
ta foe paper the day after it was
taken, recognised his picture. Than
he discovered that the woman stand
ing next to him, wearing a pancake
hat and blowing on a tin horn, was
the woman he met three years later
and married.
Robin Caught by String
Rescued After 18 Hours
DAVENPORT, IOWA_After 18
hours et looping the loop a robin was
rescued from the top of a SO foot
tree. The bird became entangled in a
string used in building a nest. The
string knotted around the bird’s leg
and as it attempted to fly away, it
would be swung around the branch
et the tree and the length of the
string shortened. Aided by two po
lice officers, a rescuer climbed a
ladder and freed the robin.
Three-Legged Dog Saves
Master From Angry Bull
GREENFIELD, MO. — A three
legged dog is a hero on the Carl
Guenther dairy farm. j
A bull attacked the 68-year-old
dairyman, knocking him down,
breaking a leg and inflicting other
injuries. The dog, hearing Guen
ther's cries for help, hippty-hopped
to the rescue and drove the animal
away froth the prostrate man.
