INCREASE IN PAY OF TEXTILE WORKERS SEEN - A. F. OF L SAYS THERE WILL BE NO “WALKOUT NEW YORK CITY, Dee. 27.—Ad ▼iaing against hasty and ill-considered strike action, Joseph Sylvia, president of the Federation of Woolen and Worsted Workers of America, A. F. of L. affiliate, commented sharply here on a CIO strike threat. A general wage increase is believed ilL,proip?* •»* will be no strike, Sylvia said at his union’s head quarters in the Bible House, 46 As tor “My attention has been called,” said President Sylvia, "to a statement is sued by the officials of the CIO tex tile union, threatening to cal la strike in the woolen and worsted industry. Contracts To Be Kept "As presflent of the Woolen and Worsted Federation, affiliated with — A. F. of L, I would inform all concerned that there will not be a strike in the woolen and worsted in dustry. “First of all, we have contracts and agreements with a number of mills providing for collective bargaining and the right to take up the wage Th*“ contracts will not be violated. Secondly, we announced our wage policy two weeks ago, giving as our mmamummm reason for a general wage raise, the increased living costs and profitabil ity of the mills to grant the same. We have already negotiated wage in creases in some mills and others are in the process of negotiation. "Third, according to our laws, no strike can be called without a vote of the members. We understand that the statement issued by the officials of the CIO textile union is designed to force the unorganised textile workers into the CIO. These workers will not be deceived by trick statements. “We are advising the unorganised textile workers not to be stampeded into any strike and advising them further to come into the federation and take up their wage grievances and other working conditions through the process of collective bargaining. The organised textile workers have not voted to strike. The unorganised are in no position to strike. “Our federation has just concluded a meeting of our executive board. Our information was that a general in crease in wages wuold be granted in the near future. We propose to wait until the first of the year before tak ing any further actions. We are therefore, making our position lmown at this time to avoid misunderstand ing." BEST WISHES FOR A PROSPEROUS 1941 WM. R. BARRINGER HOTEL CHARLOTTE, N. C.
