FACING THE FACTS With Philip Paul Who’s Yehudi in the CIO? Is Phil Murray acting as his "own man," or is he merely a puppet Presi dent? ... Does Sidney Hillman have anything to say about CIO policies or has he been crowded out of the picture? Has Hillman’s position in the na tional defense setup cramped the style of the Fifth Column microbes in the CIO? We propose to answer these ques tions fully and frankly to the best of our knowledge and ability. First of all, Phil Murray is no more his own man than is Charlie Mc Carthy. We don’t see or hear much of the ex-President of the CIO these days, it is true. Apparently he re tired into the silences when he retired from the CIO Presidency to the ac companiment of copious tears and a brass band. But, take it from us, he’s still in there pulling the strings to which Murray automatically re iponds. . For the fact is unmistakable that Murray is tied to the apron strings of his predecessor. He has been for more than twenty years. He is now. As CIO President Murray receives no salary. As Vice President of the United Mine Workers he receives *18, 000 a year. John L. Lewis is still President of the United Mine Work ers The constitution of that union gives him the right to remove any officer for “insubordination” or prac tically any other cause. There is the tie-up. Murray is completely depend ent on his boss. . We have laid off Murray since his election for the deliberate purpose of giving him a chance to assert his lead ership, if any, along constructive lines. He has failed to do so. Show us a single-step taken by Murray to promote labor peace. He has taken none. On the contrary, he has repeatedly stated he has no in tention of furthering labor peace. Yet before his election Murray was re garded as one of the sincere advocates of labor peace in the CIO. What’s happened to his principles? On the contrary he recently appointed a whole flock of known Communists to the CIO committees. Yet before his election to the CIO Presi dency, Murray was regarded as a foe of Communism. What has happened to his principles? The answer, of course, is that Mur* ray is a puppet President. Now let’s see about Sidney Hillman. After the CIO convention numerous stories were published to the effect that Hillman nad won a great victory by the retirement of Lewis. We un derstand that Hillman thought so himself. But where is the victory? So far as we can see, Hillman has lost any shred of influence over the CIO that he ever possessed. The pow ers that be are ignoring him entire ly. In fact, they’re doing everything possible to embarrass him privately and publicly in national defense mat ters. They seem to take an unholy delight in giving him a kick in the pants at any and every opportunity. Does that spell victory? Leading the bunch in the CIO that have been ganging up on Hillman are none other than the Communist Fifth Columnists. While Hillman, as asso ciate director of the Office of Pro duction Management, is trying to sell labor on the necessity of pitching in to help the national defense program, at least two CIO international union Presidents have been decrying Presi dent Roosevelt as a “warmonger” and smearing his defense policy as a “war policy.” In no single way that we can dis cover has the wretched and disgust ing style of the Red Fifth Columnists in the CIO been cramped by either Murray or Hillman. Far from it. The Communists actually seem to have in creased their power and expanded their sphere of influence. We find the names of CIO officials and em ployes prominently listed on the let ter-heads of every “appeasement” or ganization in America. We find them giving expression to statements and policies which are directly traceable to Moscow. There is no question about it. . This is an extremely serious situa tion. There is now considerable pres sure—and perhaps there will be more as time passes — for destruction of labor’s safeguards and for restric tion of labor’s rights. The American federation of Labor has made it clear in its 1941 legislative program that it will fight to the finish against any such attempts in Congress. The friends of the American Federation of Labor in Congress know it is a pa triotic organization and that it sup ports whole-heartedly the national defense program. But, the question arises, how can the American Federa tion of Labor carry the load of the CIO? How can it defend labor against the enmity which is certain to be en gendered by rash and irresponsible acts of CIO Communists? Certainly the leaders of the CIO— and that goes for Murray and Hill man — are contributing nothing to the solution of these grave problems or to the disciplining of their anti American followers. The very fact that the CIO official legislative pro gram received a hearty endorsement from the Daily Worker shows that the Reds are still shaping the policies of the CIO. Keeping Furniture In t-onaiuou "It’s time now to think of now ir care for the porcn or terrace rumi ture which must come indoors for the winter,’’ says Helen Koues, di rector, Good Housekeeping studio. "If it is to be stored, don’t put it away dirty or in bad repair—it will surely go to pieces." Miss Koues stresses the point that the life of such furniture may be greatly lengthened if kept in good repair by careful cleaning, painting or shellacking each season. Scrub reed, metal or wood furniture with soap and water, and be sure to get in all the turns and twists. It’s Easy for Husband To Fix Own Breakfast A man should not make his poor > wife get out of bed to cook his break* fast All he has to do is to: | Get a couple of eggs and a couple . of slices of bacon, put the frying pan over the flame and put the I bacon in the pan. i While the b?con is frying, put a couple of spotiiftils of coffee into a, pot with a couple at cups of water and put the pot over a burner. Grab a loaf of bread from the breadbox and a breadknife from the kitchen drawer and see if he can cut a couple of slices of bread be fore the bacon burns. Leap through the smoke and rescue the bacon. Light the burner in the oven and place the bread under it to toast. Rush to the refrigerator for butter, cream and an orange, and get back to the range in time to save what coffee hasn’t boiled over. Break the eggs into the frying pan without breaking the yolks, rush for a knife to cut the orange and squeeze it. What’s that burning? Great heavens! The toast! Dash back and save what is left of the toast, scrap* ing off the charred portions. Rush back to the range to turn the eggs. Rush back to the toast to but ter it. Rush back to the range to save the eggs. Dish the eggs and the bacon and, while they are getting cold, strain the coffee into a cup. It will either be a pale yellow it is so weak, or an inky black it is so strong. Leave everything as it is for wife to clean up, put on hat and coat and go out to breakfast. And there, with no more skill than it takes to make an airplane engine, he has a breakfast fit for a king. The king it is fit for is probably one without a country, refugeeing from the war. In localities where winters are Sand severe, a compact plan low ceilings are said to be de sirable to permit ease of heating with economy. In such locations full advantage of the radiant heat of the sun is desirable in as many rooms as possible, as well as some form of protection from cold winds. In a warm climate the opposite is required and less compact plans are needed in order to take advantage of prevailing breezes and to secure cross and through ventilation in as mmy rooms as possible. In this caps protection from the heat of the sun is needed, and the most de sirable rooms are those which are cool and shaded. patronize raosE WHO ADVERTISE IN THE JOURNAL McElice Stays On Local Housing Administration L. When the talk is down your alley be as positive as you like, but when it gets around to the other fellow’s field, let him tell you. The reason this simple rule is so hard to follow is that the average fellow is afraid to admit he doesn’t know everything about everything. He is afraid that if he asks ques tions and try to learn from the other fellow, he’ll think he is smarter. Proof that nothing like that happens occurs all the time. A man or wom an will spend two hours listening to another person explain the subject in which he is most interested, in terrupting only to ask an intelligent question. And the other fellow will say, “There’s a smart person.’’ Pies in Refrigerators A device you may borrow from commercial pastry makers is that of holding ready-to-bake pies in the refrigerator for an hour or more before baking.
