C., THURSDAY 27, 1941 BIBLE THOUGHT ' A soft answer turneth wrath; but grievous words stir up anger, x x x The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness, x x x The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.—Prov. 18:1-2-3. WESTBROOK PEGLER, THE PERFECT MAN! Westbrook Pegler loosened up his wrath against the A. F. of L. in Washington Monday, appearing before a House committee studying legislative action against strikes in defense industri * The same old vitriolic Pegler, seeing no good in anything the A. F. of L. does, or any of its affiliated internationals. Behold, in Westr brook you have the “perfect man.” A critic, and a vitrolic one, of each and everyone who agrees with him not. We have been con nected with, and affiliated with, the Federation for nearly 52 years, and by and far it will stack up for decency, honest and up rightness with any body of men of like numbers that this writer knows of. True, it has had some crooks in it; true, it has made mistakes, but will Mr. Pegler tell us of an organization composing over five million members that has not had a few crooked leaders, as well as members, and we do not except the Church. Mr. Pegler took particular pains to lay off the C. I. O., toward which he has leaning, and was once a member of it, if he is not now. The A. F. of L. has weathered many such gales over half a century, an dhas grown like the proverbial bay tree. The Journml is glad to note that Mecklenburg will not have a three man tax board, and that J. Arthur Henderson will continue in his present position. Some one remarked to us the other day that if Christopher Columbus was alive today you would have a hard time convincing him the world was round in its present shape. If the Legislature would cease holding one-day sessions of that body outside of Raleigh the business of the State could be finished at an earlier date. These little jaunts only upsset the routine. Our Negro criminal problem is becoming more acute. With a murder record of five for January-February, on Tuesday night four desperate negro criminals staged a jail-break in which fortunately there was no fatalities. On March 31st the Duke Endowment will pass out a million dollars or more, for hospitalization in the Carolinas. The money that you give to Reddy Killowatt comes back in many ways to aid humanity, especially in the Carolinas. PATRONIZE JOURNAL ADVERTISERS ROSELAND FLORAL CO. PHONES 8191 AND 8192 300 N. F. of L. executive council is bringing out some interesting news stories, whether exaggerated or not, we do not know, but our faith remains in the A. Five murders, all negroes, have occurred in Charlotte this February, and we are not yet at the dose of the month. The “mysteries” have all been solvd and the murderers are in custody. The Legislature is on its way out One of the redeeming features of the 1941 session is that it was short for which it is to be commended. It does seem that of all times 1941, with America standing at the Cross-Roads of Destiny is no time to array class against mass, or Capital against Labor, or vice versa.
