Charlotte tabor and Management Unite For Victory
Long before Pearl Harbor the South led the entire country in recognizing the danger to our American Way of Life. So—even now. Southern com
munities like our own Charlotte lead the country in intensified co-operation for our ultimate VICTORY.
I
THE PRICE OF INDEPENDENCE
It was 166 years ago this month that Thomas Jefferson
wrote in a now famous Declaration that “all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent
and inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness.”
Today, the subjugated peoples of Europe have life—but no
liberty. Nor are they engaged in the pursuit of happiness, except
insofar as they commit acts of sabotage against their Nazi con
querors. .
We in America have the opportunity to fight for the in
alienable right of ourselves and our Allies to be free for all time.
Our gallant airmen, naval forces and soldiers are fighting for
this independence.
Our production soldiers in giant factory upon giant factory
are working night and day to preserve this sacred heritage.
All of us, young and old, can join the battle through the
regular purchase of War Savings Bonds and Stamps, investing
ten cents out of every dollar we receive.
The Declaration of Independence declares that governments
derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed, that
whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these
ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.”
That is what the people of France, of Belgium, of Holland,
Norway, Denmark, Italy—want to do! We can help them throw
off the yoke of Hiterism by plunging our dollars into the fight.
Buy War Bonds for freedom.
A SOLDIER RETURNS
I got back last week, back from Honolulu. The folks were sure glad
to see me, and I was just as glad to see them. I had written them from
the Coast that I would be home in three days. There was nothing, in
their reception of my homecoming, that was left undone.
I wonder, though, if they weren’t too extravagant. Of course Dad’s
got a swell job now, and Sis is going great guns on her new job. My
brother’s suits have jumped from twenty-two-fifty to forty bucks apiece,
mostly by his own choice; and the five-dollar shoes we always wore
aren’t good enough any more. He isn’t in service yet.
I couldn’t tell these things to them. They might think I was war
crazy. But somehow it didn’t make sense to me. . . .
In church last Sunday I noticed that Dad gave his usual two bits;
evidently giving hasn’t gone up any. But at home, where there used
to be a bottle of beer in the icebox on Sunday, there’s hardly room for
the food now. They buy war savings stamps now, though, and I think
that’s grand of them, except that what they buy doesn’t come to any
more than they used to put in the bank (dollar for dollar), while the
family income has practically doubled.
My car, the one I left behand, now stands in the garage, and not
on tires either. There are four blocks of wood where the tires used to be;
but my brother (my tires fit his car) still drives around the corner to
buy a loaf of bread.
Shortly after I got home, my sis took me to her room and showed me
the new things she’d bought. There were at least a dozen pair of new
silk hose, a new silk bedspread for her hopechest (though she says it’s
hopeless) and several new silk dresses. Just about enough, I realized, to
bring one good pilot safely down to earth.
Maybe I’m a bit hysterical on this thing, and maybe I’m not. I’ll
admit there have been no bombs screaming down at them, and I pray
to God there won’t be. But if they think the Army, and the Navy, and
the Marines, can win this war without their help, they’re badly mistaken.
Bombs make wonderful alarm clocks; but won’t someone, please,
wake them up, before one drops down their chimney?

GOD IN A FOXHOLE
By REV. JOHN W. HOLLAND
Out of the fighting of our American troops on the Bataan Peninsula
have come incidents that will live as loiM; as men love the heroic.
Lt. Col. Warren J. Clear relates Mat one day when the Japanese
attack was particularly severe, he threw himself into one of the little
dugouts or so-called “foxholes’* for protection. In the “foxhole” was A
lieutenant crouching low for safety. He was praying aloud. The colonel
says that he found himself also praying aloud.
When the attack subsided Colonel Clear said, “1 noticed that you also
were praying aloud.”
The lieutenant replied, “Sir, there are no atheists in foxholes!”
It is one of the mysteries of the human soul that, in times of
extreme danger, we instantly pray. There are a thousand ideas about
God, many of them conflicting and some of them unreasonable. But
when the rub comes and death stalks us, it seems natural for practically
all people to pray.
TURNS TO PRAYER
I have a letter from a man whose two sons have just enlisted in
the armed forces. He writes:
I’ll cmIw to 7M that I haven’t bothered Myrelf vary mch aheat Gad far the put
few year*. Bat since ay bay* have (one to face additional dancer of Any life, I find
■yself coins amend with a prayer to Gad. 1 want yea to Join la ay prayers. I aa
sorry that I have net always been a praying aan. Gad see ms to he the only final hope we
have now.
This man is just like thousands of other American men and women.
So long as everything was going smoothly and the “goose hanging high,”
there was no time for prayer, religion, church, or God. Now that the
most terrible war of all history threatens our very national and racial
existence, we find a place for God.
Atheists flourish best in sunny, peaceful times. The hardships of
life drive men to something more substantial than their own philosophies.
“WHO MADE THOSE STARS?”
One evening during his Egyptian campaign, Napoleon was talking
with one of his aides and the aide said that he doubted the very existence
of God. Napoleon then looked up at the Milky Way. “You say there is
no God? Then tell me who made those stars?”
One of the very best helps we can give to our young fighting men
is to surround them with prayer ... to let them know that we believe
that God is, and that He is interested in the outcome of this struggle for
human freedom. Future generations will call this war a “Freedom War,”
and will write that pagan hordes were defeated by peoples who believed
in God. **■’ <
Many people were turning back from following Jesus. He turned to
Peter and asked, “Will you also go away?” He replied, “To whom shall
we go but to Thee; Thou hast the word of eternal life.”
“There are no atheists in foxholes.”
