OUR AIM To influence Public Opinion in favor of the Organized Labor Movement. CHARLOTTE, N. C., THURSDAY, JULY 30, 1942 WEEKLY BIBLE QUOTATION . “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be on the vines: the labor of the olive shall fail, and the field shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls; yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will joy in the God of my salvation.” A THOUGHT FOR TODAY Those who yelled loudest that the President “will call off the November elections,” will soon wish that he had done so. MR. PEGLER COMES OUT OF HIDING , Westbrook Pegler will now have to change the form letter he sends out in answer to those who question his motives in his anti-union labor columns. He usually says something to the effect that he is merely against union racketeers; which of course, is merely a sub terfuge on the part of Mr. Pegler. It is like being against ill health—WHO ISN’T? Every union man is against union racketeers, every doctor is against the quack who occasionally brings disgrace to their great profession, and every lawyer is against the shyster who will do anything for a dollar. But now, Mr. Pegler must come out from behind the dis guise. He has shown his colors. In his syndicated column of July 25th, Mr. Pegler goes on as the new champion of the unorganized workers and he makes five references, far from complimentary to “Unions,” “Labor Unions,” “Unioneers”— No longer the subterfuge about fighting union racketeers, but just plain, “Unions,” “Labor Ujtfons,” “Unioneers”—Yea, Mr. Pegler is against them, and his open declaration is at least more honest than many others who are fighting Labor Unions, but who still hide behind some sort of lie, in their attempt to get at the unions. Mr. Pegler is shedding tears for the unorganized workers. Why should union members get certain benefits while the great bulk of unorganized workers do not participate. What a wondeful thing it would be if we could all hear Mr. Pegler’s answer to this one, “Do you want the organized workers to disband to be ‘even’ with the unorganized workers, or would you like to see the unorganized workers, unionized to be ‘even’ with the union members?” T. D. Kemp, Jr., Of The Observer Is Elated Mr. Kemp in his column the other day is delighted with the speech delivered by Secretary of State Mr. Hull. Delighted because Mr. Hull’s speech did not make any pointed reference to a future “brotherhood” or “Union of Nations” to hold the peace of the future world. Of course, Mr. Kemp knows no mre than any of us just what the people of the world who are fighting this war will do after our VICTORY will have been won, but we would like to make one bet with him—that fifty years hence—the speech of Henry Wallace will be required reading in the high schools of the world, and that speech made many references to a world ruled by a feeling of “brotherhood.” What is wTrong with at least thinking about it? Does it not follow, that, hope kept alive constantly has a better chance of realization than if it were submerged? Many men, the great minds of this earth, have had visions of such a brotherhood of nations. Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare, Hugo Grotius, Jan Smuts, Woodrow Wilson, and above all of the w’orld thinkers, were the words of Christ who everlastingly spoke of a “Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man.” Who can interpret that as meaning anything else than a so-called “League of Nations.” We like to play with the thought that had William Randolph Hearst, and Senators Brandegee, Lodge, Borah, Johnson and Reed, been dead when WOODROW WILSON re turned from Europe with his Article X, of the League of Na tions, there would have been no HITLER, no Mussolini, no Hirohito and no war. Who can possibly prove otherwise? 1 BIG STAR &/’& markets “It’s Fun To Shop and Save At These Modern Food Markets ... . Mr. J. A. Scoggins, our President, opened the meeting at 8 P. M. A word is necessary about Mr. Scoggins—all he has to do is take care of his own business and affairs and his family, sit on the RATIONING BOARD of Charlotte, answer thousands of questions pertinent to labor and union affairs, and then preside at the Central Body meetings. Quite a man—but that is the opinion of anyone and everyone who knows J. A. Mr. Bill Green, the secretary was on hand his usual smile was very much in Evidence. He is still acting very proud about his brother’s picture in a leading national magazine as one of NORTH CAROLINA’S contribu tion to our flying forces. Most of the work of the meeting was devoted to the preparation of the ASHEVILLE CONVENTION of the State Federation of Labor. Mr. Blackwelder of the National Post Office Clerks, had some interesting high lights on the South Carolina convention of the Post Office Clerks and we will give a detailed report on the work accomplished there in our next issue. The Central LABOR UNION of Charlotte heartily endorsed the recent statement of Mr. William Green, President of the A. F. of L. to the effect that our WAR EFFORT becomes the paramount business of every meet ing, every convention and every member of the A. F. of L.
