Green Mobilizes AFL Unions For Scrap Salvage Campaign WASHINGTON, D. C.—President William Green of the American Federation of Labor called on the officers and members of the AFL central labor unions and State federations of labor to cooperate 100 per cent in the nation-wide campaign to salvage scrap which is absolutely necessary in the production of steel required in the war effort. Pointing out that collecting the “millions of tons of scrap needed to keep the mills going is the only way American workers can obtain enough steel to build the guns, ships, tanks and planes to win the war,” Mr. Green said: “Organized labor must put its shoulder to the wheel. It must lend its great organizing ability to the job of getting everybody working together to get the scrap in quickly. “Here’s what you can do—NOW! “1. Immediately appoint a representative committee in your area to work jointly on the Scrap Drive, and to impress upon their members the fact that there is much manufactured scrap, dormant and unused materials in the local plants where they are employed. Appeal to all Labor-Management War Production Committees to designate someone in each plant to get all scrap moving at once and to obtain management’s cooperation in the drive. “2. Have your committee call on the Local Defense Council or Salvage Manager immediately to find out what the Salvage Committee is doing on scrap collection. Get that committee to work out a plan for labor’s participation in the drive. Get them to help by providing manpower and assisting in getting trucks for collection purposes. If no Salvage Committee exists, insist that one be appointed. “a. As you know, it is the stated policy of the National Of fice of Civilian Defense Councils including Salvage Committees. If that policy has not been followed point out to your council or Salvage Manager the advantages and need for labor participa tion. * “b. Together with your Local Defense Council or Salvage Manager, obtain the cooperation of the mayor and other public officials, as well as of industry, newspapers and any other agen cies, to provide transportation for house to house scrap collection on regular designated scrap collection days. * “3. Obtain cooperation of the press, radio, and any and all organizations to provide publicity and stir community interest in the scrap drive. 1 “4. See that all practical facilities for collection is worked out and appoint someone to see that it is kept moving. “This is a matter of life and death. Labor must not fail. National Newspaper Week The week of Oct. 1-8, will be celebrated by all the newspapers as National Newspaper Week, an dthe theme for the event will be “NEWSPAPERS GO ALL OUT FOR VICTORY.” Most newspapers will inaugu rate the week with further ex tensive drives for the promotion of the sale of war bonds and de vote their space and effort for the serious scrap metal drive. The daily papers in North Car olina and Charlotte have com menced a very wonderful cam paign for the collection of scrap metals, and every Carolinian will be very proud of the results. Scrap Metal Drive This is a real problem and one that every one of us can help solve for our country. Our fac tories are waiting for metal scrap. The slightest delay in waiting for necessary steel and iron may prolong the war, and the factories must be kept hum ming, making guns and tanks and planes and shells. Let every one of us devote the next three weeks in a determined effort to gather up every piece of scrap metal or out-moded and useless metal euipment in our homes on our farms and in the attics. WATCH THE DAILY PAPERS FOR INSTRUCTIONS AS TO ITS DISPOSAL—AND GET THE SCRAP. IT IS SERIOUS—IT IS IMPORTANT Working Men and Women of North Carolina GATHER THE SCRAP METAL YOUR PRIZE is the PRESERVATION OF YOUR URERTIES This space is a contribution to America’s all out war effort by the following firms and individuals of North Carolina.
