NEW YORK CITY—The Women’s International Exposition of Arts and Industries, featuring many phases of women’s work in the war effort, to be held at Madison Square Garden No vember 19-24, will include an his-, torical exhibit by the American Fed eration of Labor showing the role the AFL has played from the time of suf frage up to the attack on Wake Is land where some 1,200 AFL workmen laid down their tools and took up guns. What has been done since that day in relation to the war effort will be revealed. The exposition will feature the im portance of women on the industrial front, including a job formation cen Two Out Of Five Of “Tar Heel” Workers Women Two out of every five workers in North Carolina’s wartime industrial machine are women, according to re sults of a survey of five major in dustries made public today by the State Department of Labor. A total of 81,812 men and 52,763 women are employed by 666 manu facturing establishments covered by the survey, the report shows. Of the 134,575 workers employed in these plants, 60.8 per cent are men and 39.2 per cent women. Industries surveyed included 191 cotton textile establishments employ ing 41,500 men and 27,226 women; 44 furniture plants with 7,458 men and 253 women; 42 full-fashioned hosiery mills with 3,608 men and 6,397 wom en; 80 seamless hosiery mills with 3,303 men and 6,877 women; and 15 rayon manufacturing plants with 2, 253 men and 2,041 women. A total of 294 mills listed as "other industries” were also surveyed, employing 23,690 men and 9,969 women. -V Scoggins Doing A Great Job Recently Mr. J. A. Scoggins, Presi dent of the Charlotte Central Labor Union took a leave of absence from his regular position and spent his en tire time handling the ticklish and trying administrative work of the of fice of Rationing Administrator, of which he is Chairman for Mecklen burg County. It is well to mention the glowing reports we hear from people on all sides and in all walks of life of the fine work that Mr. Scoggins is doing at this difficult task. Charlotte, in general and organized labor in par ticular may well be proud of Mr. Scog gins’ record in every job he has been given to tackle. -V Southern Labor Drafts Program Stronger Voice In War Agencies ATLANTA, Ga.—Labor in the South will have a great repre sentation on Rationing Boards, Man Power Boards, and other agencies whose activities have a direct bearing upon the work ers of the South.
