The young man standing at extreme right, Robert E. Brown, is The Journal’s
last contribution to our armed forces, bringing the list to five boys who have vol
unteered, and he is going to make a good “Devil Dog,” we believe, for he made a
good “Devil” in our office.

But she knew nothing about vitamins
— she used to cook away most of
them. Today we have learned to use
a minimum of water to avoid boiling
all the good out of vegetables; we
have stopped putting soda on green
vegetables to make them look green.
And we don t throw away the water in which vegetables are cooked, but
use it in making gravies, sauces and soups. We use the automatic tempera*
ture controls on modem electric or gas ranges to bake and roast so that
proper cooking temperatures can be maintained.

Scoggins Doing
A Great Job
Recently Mr. J. A. Scoggins, Presi
dent of the Charlotte Central Labor
Union took a leave of absence from
his regular position and spent his en
tire time handling the ticklish and
trying administrative work of the of
fice of Rationing Administrator, of
which he is Chairman for Mecklen
burg County.
It is well to mention the glowing
reports we hear from people on all
sides and in all walks of life of the
fine work that Mr. Scoggins is doing
at this difficult task. Charlotte, in
general and organized labor in par
ticular may well be proud of Mr. Scog
gins’ record in every job he has been
given to tackle.

This was guaranteed as a re

AFL representatives and of

out a constructive and coopera
