KXALTING CHRIST IN THE
LIFE OF THE NATION
Isaiah 9:2-7; Lake 1:26-33
IThe Birth of Christ Prophesied, by
By Ben F. Favell
The coming of Christ the Mea
r siah was foretold by the prophet
Isaiah 734 years in advance. Says
Isaiah, “The people that walked
in darkness have seen a great
Might; they that dwell in the Land
of the Shadow of Death, upon them
Lath a great light shined.1* If
ever a people walked in darkness it
was the descendants of Jnda dar
ing the century marked by the
i birth of Christ. God’s people were
> under the heavy yoke of Rome,
"the mistress of the world. They
Lad only limited freedom and were
forced to pay crashing taxes. Their
spiritual life was under a cloud
of oppressive regulations and man
made commandments. The simple
laws of Moses written at the com
mand of God had been so circum
scribed with interpretations by
scribes and pharisees that all joy

mi taken out of religion. No
word had come from God and no
prophet had arisen lor centuries.
Isiah prophesied that the Christ
should come as a child. He should
be called “wonderful counsellor,
rbe mighty God. The everlasting
father, the prince of peace.” One
needs only to review the record
of the life of Jesus the Christ to
And that Christ exemplified every
one of these titles. The spirit of
this same prophesy was also re
peated by the Angel Gabriel to the
Virgin Mary who was to become
the medium through which God
was to send his son, the prince of
peace into the world to establish
his heavenly Kingdom.
The Jewish Nation Tamed from
the Light
The people who walked in dark
ness saw a great light but they
as a people with the exception of
a hand full of devout followers,
failed to see the way out of their
dilemma. They loured for a great
military leader. Christ came a
great spiritual leader. They ex
pected a political revolution. Christ
began a revolution of thought.
They were given a wonderful
counselor, but they, turned a deaf

ear. They admitted that only one
from God could do. such mighty
works but refused to be convinced
by them. Jesus testified, “He that
bath seen me hath seen the
Father,” but they resented it and
called it blasphemy. He taught
that the way of peace is the Gold
en Rule and brotherly love, but
they preferred “An eye for an
eye and a tooth for a tooth.”
There could be but one inevitable
result. , Destruction. Even the
temple was utterly destroyed anc
the people massacred or carriec
away into captivity. During th'
last few years the descendants oi
these same people have gone
through the most horrible perse
cutions and deaths ever brought
upon a people. Their very lives
have been spared only in those
countries where the teaching of
the magazine have so saturated
the thinking of their citizens as to
nfluende the acts of government.
The Chritian nations were horri
fied at the inhuman treatment at
he hands of the axis powers and
went to their defense with their
ives and all their resources. The
nfluence of the teacher spurned
1900 years ago makes a lot of def
erence to thg Hebrew of today.
The Great' Nations Today Are
Being Tested
The world is rushing in dark
ness. Will we turn to the wonder
ful counselor for guidance?
There is distressing evidence
that the world will follow the same
old course .of destruction. All
neat nations are jacking for po
sitions of power. There are signs
of the playing of the old game
of power polities. There are many
whose faith is wholly in might,
REDDY NOTE
FOR CHRISTMAS
Now’s the time to start planning an electric Christmas for the daugh»
ter in your family.
You’ve no idea how many services I c$n Jperform lQr her right in her
own room, if you’ll just give me outlets!Ill light her room attractively,
bring her her favorite tunes ... even help with her music lessons ., •

That thrilling room is going to prove popular with your daughter's
young girl friends, too. Not a bit unlikely that it will be their

that some philosophy that de
stroyed Germany. But there are
also encouraging evidences that
hey will turn to the light of lights.
Vs evidence of this let me quote
nrominent military authorities,
ventral McArthur said "What
Vmerica needs is better people.”
General Hodges in an interview
'•'hen asked what Korea needled
moat said: “The greatest need of
\orea is missionaries.” General
^jpenhower stated recently that
vhen he first went to Germany
he task of making over the Ger
man nation seemed hopeless till
he found that a number of devout
Lutheran pastors were preaching
repentance to their people, telling
them that Germany had committed
a great national sin in bringing
about this war of wholesale mur
der.
Note carefully this exact quo
cation of Field Marshall Smutts.
?rime Minister of British South
Africa. “Fundamentally the world
has no need of a new order but
•nly the hone3t courageous appli
cation of the historical Christian
idea. Our Christian civilization
is based on eternal order, an end
less plan in the message of Christ.
Let us follow that greatest light
that has ever arisen on the human
horizon and which can surely lead
us to thai better world, for which
we are longing. In the twilight

great military leaders are exalting
Christ. Let us follow their lead.
We must turn to the light per
sonally. Nations are made up of
individuals. Mo nation can ex
alt Christ and follow his teachings
unless its individuals first follow
him. As a teacher in the Bible
school, however, small your class,
you are a vital factor in the sav
ing of our loved America. As a
parent your greatest responsibil
ity is to teach by example and
precept the better way of life to
your child. Together exalting
Jhrist America will become belter
and greater.
