C. AFL Pleads For A World Peace In Warning To Paris Columbus, O.—In a fervent j appeal for world peace, AFL' President William Green call- j ed upon United Nations lead- j era at the Paris Conference to forge “clear-cut and honest agreements” to abolish future wars. Speaking before the con vention of the Glass Bottle Blowers’ Associa t i o n, Mr. Green emphasized that a showdown with Soviet Russia is an essential prerequisite to a peaceful world. He insisted that other nations have no de signs on Russia and are will ing to “live and let live,” He charged that aggressive So viet policies “have aroused widespread suspicion that her talk of self-defense is merely a cloak for a brazen imperial istic design.” . Since organized labor has been denied a voice at the peace tables, Mr. Green said he thought it im portant to voice the AFL's views at this time on international issues. He added: “First of all, we insist that peace without justice is a fraud and a sham which is bound to lead to war. We regard slavery as an in human institution and we do not believe that even our former ene mies should be placed in perma nent bondage. Human freedom must be the foundation stone for the peace settlements and if any doubt exists as to disposition of territory, the people of the country affected should be accorded the right to decide for themselves at free elections under what flag they shall live. i “I have stated these principles in general ter m3. Now let us get more specific. We must face the fact that a very real conflict exists in the world today between the democratic nations on the one hand and Soviet Russia on the other. I am confident that this conflict can be resolved by peaceful means. It must be, if there is a spark of common sense left in the human race. But I do not believe that we can reach a showdown with Rus sia and a permanent way out of our present differences by methods of appeasement. “To us it appears incontroverti ble that Soviet Russia has employ ed obstructive tactics in the coun cils of the United Nations. We do not like the way she has seized territory and property in Europe and Asia by main force, without consulting other nations. We re sent her denial of basic freedoms to the people in other lar.d3 over which she holds sway. “On the other hand, Russia in sists that the actions we complain of are necessary to her seif-de fense. Apparently Soviet leaders are suffering from the delusion that other nations are determined to forge a ring around the Soviet Union and destroy it. “Premier Stalin may see fit to feed such fears to the Russian peo ple, but they have no basis in truth or in fact. No nation of compar able strength, certainly not the United States, has .any designs on Russia. We do not want any part of anything she possesses. While we may not approve of her from of government, we are willing to live and let live. “Therefore, aggressive Soviet policies have aroused the wide spread suspicion that her talk of self-defense is merely a cloak for a brazen imperialistic design. “World peace cannot be based on suspicion. If the nations of the world are to live permanently in friendship and cooperation they must learn to understand and trust each other. Under the circumstan ces, no time must be lost in ob taining a showdown with Russia. If she sincerely wants peace, the democratic nations of the world will be overjoyed and will her the most liberal treatment. But if Rus. sia is merely trying to build up to another war, it is much better for the world to know about-jt in time to prevent it by courageous action now. “We hope and pray that the statesmen attending the conference in Paris will heed our advice and our warninings. We urge them from the bottom of our hearts to do their utmost to arrive at clear cut and honest ageements which will forge a lasting peace. We pledge them our full support to ward that end. Once peace is se cure, we can go on with redoubled energy and new inspiration to cre ate a better and more prosperous world for all its inhabitants.” NAM ANTI UNION DRIVE IN HIGH SCHOOLS BARED Detroit:—Charges that the Na tional Association of Manufactur ers is spreading ar.ti-OPA propa ganda through the public schools to defeat price control were made by Publications Director Irvine Ker rison, American Federation of Teachers (AFL). “High-powered NAM speakers,’’ he declared, “have appeared in American high schools expounding subtle but effective anti-labor and pro-NAM propaganda. Recent pub lications of the manufacturers and circulated widely among teachers contain clever cartoons aimed at organized labor. Union teachers are distressed and ashamed that many non-union teachers are being duped and used to undermine the wtifare of children in their classes and of those children’s parents.” 3.000 TRANSIT WORKERS IN CHICAGO GET RAISE Chicago.—An hourly increase of 18 cents for 5,000 employes of the 1 Chicago Rapid Transit Co., who j operate the city’s streetcar and elevated lines, was approved by ! the U. S. District Court here, j The increase launched a legal I battle over a two-cent raise in fares, which the company insti- ! , tuted when the Amalgamated j Street Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employes (AFL) first made I its demands. The Illinois Com merce Commission ruled the fare ' boost was unnecessary. Refusal | of the company to cut the fare i to 10 cents was upheld in the Cir I cuit Court. - GREETINGS TO LABOR FOR A SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION And for the Promotion of Better Labor-Management Relations. • L A.
