June Factory Output High Washington, D. C.—Basing his 1 forecast on the rapid recovery in 1 the Nation’s major industries, John j D. Small, Civilian Production Ad-1 ministrator, predicted a “record volume” of goods will flow to con sumers in the next six months. Factory output reached a new j peak in June, Small said in his | quarterly report, topping prewar j monthly records in wishing ma chines, vacuum cleaners, gas rang- i es, electric irons and table radios, j The slumps that were noted j were not sufficient to offset the i general gains. Autos fell off 11j per cent in June from May, but rose in July; tires and farm equip ment also dropped in June by 3 and ! 10 per cent, respectively. One warning note was sounded: It is probable that a “serious short. j age of labor is developing” which may prove to be “an important j limiting factor in production by the ■ end of the year.” “The prospects are that business will, first, have to Recruit back | into the labor force large numbers j of these who have left it since V-J Day, and second, require that large amounts of overtime be worked if production schedules' are to be met, Small said. Despite the fact that 10,000,000 i veterans and 50,000,000 war work ers have been discharged into the labor market in the last 12 months, the industrial demand for workers i has been so great that unemploy ment has risen only 1,600,000, and “still may be considered remark- j ably low,” Mr. Small said. “The demand for labor in the re maining months of 1046 will be large if, as it now appears, the ! country’s production continues to rise,” h'e went On. “This demand will have to be filled from a de pleted labor pool amounting to less than 4,000,000 workers.” 69 MILLION AUTO TIRES NEW GOAL SET BY CPA Washington, D. C.—The Civilian Production Administration has an nounced that production of tires ! for passenger cars and motorcy- j cles will be stepped up during the last half of this year. Director W. J. Sears of the CPA rubber division announced that a goal of 69,150,000 tires can be at- j tained, even though only 30,842, 101 were produced in the first six j months. In order to reach this ' goal, the CPA will use its distri- | bution of natural and synthetic rubber and other materials to in crease production of passenger cars and motorcycles.
