Quite a large number of printers were employed on the newspapers and in commercial shape back in those days. All the type was then set by hand and long hours were required to produce the typo for the daily papers. Members of the Typographical Union wore fore* moat in promoting better working conditions for American workers. The Typographical Union ia the oldest in America. It was the in* stigator of plans to form the American Labor Movement which resulted in the setting up of the American Federation of Labor. Like Uncle 8am it has quite a few thousands of sons and daughters, nephews and nieces. It is proud of its contribution to the better ment of working conditions for all American workers. Today it has dosed shop agreements through out the United States and Can ada and its business with the newspapers and commercial shops is carried on in a business-like and dignified manner. William M. Witter, for many years pub lisher of The Charlotte Labor Journal, who has retired, is one of perhaps two living charter mem bers of Charlotte Typographical Union. Re resides at Mt Marsh Road. Charlotte. * The Union today Is headed by Claude L. Albea. preseident, C. J. Pridgen, vice president; O. N. Bur gess, secretary-treasurer: H. L. Beatty, recording secretary, and H. B. Alexander, sergeant-at-arms. PENN8Y BALLOTT1NG CON. CLUDED; BIG TASK OF COUNTING STARTS1 Philadelphia, Pa.—After nearly a month of ballotting, National Mediation Board crew* this week wound up the biff collective bar- ' graining election among 50.000 shopmen on the Pennsylvania. Those voting by mail still have a few days to get in their ballots. However, the job of counting the returns will be a huge one. First, mediators must check the signatures on the outer en velopes of nil mail ballots against names in eight big books contain ing the carrier's shop payroll. This is done to guard against any irregularities. That will take at least a week. After checking, the mail ballots are thrown with those cast at the polls, and then actual tallying will start, Board officials esti mated the Anal count won't be available until the second week in May.
