C.—A political wrangle engaged in by the Senate during the final hours of its clos ing session prevented a final vote on President Truman’s nomina tions to fill new NLRB jobs cre ated by the Taft-Hartley law. Mr. Truman appointed former Senator Abe Murdock of Utah and J. Copeland Gray of Buffalo to new positions on the National Labor Relations Board. He chose Robert N. Denham, NLRB trial examiner, to serve as general counsel of the board. Thus the Senate, which had the last word to say on the new anti labor pleasure, failed to confirm the men designated to play an important part in the adminis tration of the new law. This will serve only to cloud the already complicated situation and will de lay the reorganisation on a per manent basis of the NLRB. The way was paved for Senate action when the Senate Labor Committee approved the Presi dent’s appointments. It voted unanimously in favor of Mr. Den ham for the new position of gen eral counsel. The vote was 9 to 3 jn favor of Murdock and Gray. UR-00 ELECTIONS CLOSE; MAJORITY EUHBLES VOTING Washington, D. O.—Seventy four per cent of th^ ballots cast (faring June in elections conduct ed by the National Labor Rela tions Board were in favor of col lective bargaining by some labor organisation. The NLRB report showed a nip and tack race between the AFL and CIO in the nuaiber of elec tions won. The AFL was victo rious in 147 elections, or 62 per cent of those in which it partici pated, while the CIO won out on 107 occasions with a percentage score of 66 per cent. Contests pitting the AFL and CIO directly against each other resulted in 24 AFL victories as against 32 wins chalked up by the CIO. The 864 cases filed with NLRB in June represented a decrease of 38 per cent from the number filed in June a year ago. The backlog of cases still to be com pleted is, however, 10 per cent greater than the figure for June, 1946. At the end of last month, 6,073 cases were awaiting action at various procedural levels. A total of 431 elections were conducted during the month with 64,063 ballots cast. This repre sented 87 per cent of those eli gible to vote.
